Nestled on the border of Haringey and Islington, Coleridge Primary is a four-form entry primary school, spanning across two sites. Walking around the school, there is always one magical, unifying factor children and teachers all revel in learning together. There is never a dull moment. Lessons are creative, exciting and are planned to engage and stimulate. At Coleridge, we provide an outstanding learning experience where we inspire children to become creative problem solvers, ready to thrive and succeed in the 21st Century. We aim to give children a positive first experience of learning and to make them responsible citizens who appreciate the value of a strong sense of community. At Coleridge Primary School we aim to create a happy, friendly, and inclusive school, where children and adults respect each other. We want children to grow up enjoying learning. The last 10 years have seen momentous change at Coleridge Primary School. The decision to allow more Crouch End children to attend the school by expanding to four-form entry by taking over the former TUC education center was a courageous decision that has proved more than beneficial. The world is changing and the school must change with it to fulfill our desire to make learning relevant for the next and future generations. The physical expansion of the school may be complete but we must continue to expand our horizons. The challenges facing our children are not just academic. There is a need for us to educate the whole child to become future citizens morally strong, with the ability to think for themselves and the ability to recognize the importance of health and fitness. We must keep pace with technology, not allowing it to dominate school life but using it as a necessary tool. The school day, already accommodating before and after school clubs, will develop over time to help working and single-parent families. The Victorian House and its development are crucial in this endeavor. Coleridge Vision Statement: “Knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do and how to respond when the going gets tough.” The future for our children is uncertain and the challenges that face them may not have even been conceived by the human mind. In addition to teaching children skills and knowledge, we at Coleridge think that it is essential to teach children values that will be fundamentally useful, regardless of the ever-changing political and educational landscapes. These core values, which we seek to instill in our children, are therefore central to Coleridge and underpin all that goes on in the school. We, therefore, encourage our children and the wider school community to be: Respectful, Reflective, Resilient, Aspiring, Aspiring. Through teaching these values, the school hopes to inspire children to become creative problem solvers, ready to thrive and succeed in the 21st Century. Coleridge is a diverse urban school with children from a wide social background, catering for a broad range of ability including children with special needs statements and/or physical disability. Our community comes from streets that are within approximately half a mile of the school. This area is home to some members of Haringey’s diverse ethnic minority communities. The Behaviour Policy at Coleridge Primary School is central to our vision and ethos. It runs through the whole school, teaching and providing opportunities for children to learn how to behave appropriately in a range of circumstances. The school’s behavior policy is a document that will be shared, understood, and used by the whole school community. We aim to ensure and promote the health, safety, and welfare of every member of the school community. We actively promote and endorse a sensible and proportionate approach to health and safety in school, striking the right balance, so that the real risks are managed while learning opportunities are experienced to the full. Within nursery the focus is on developing children’s speaking and listening skills to enlarge their vocabulary, to learn to talk with confidence in different situations. Throughout the school, we follow the document ‘Letters and sounds’. This document is divided into 6 sections, that we base activities around throughout the infants and into the juniors where necessary. When children come into reception they will have experienced a wealth of activities listening and participating in songs and rhymes. Some children will be able to orally segment and blend words – cat – cat. Others may not, that’s ok. We identify the level the child is at and differentiate accordingly.
