Welcome to the Clerkenwell Parochial CE Primary School. Located on Amwell Street, near Pentonville Road and Rosebury Avenue, we are amongst the highest achieving schools in Islington with consistently good results in terms of both progress and attainment. The children benefit from our rich curriculum. The School's Six Chosen Values - Known as 'The Well'. We embody the ethos, vision, and mission statement in six values which we explore with the children through ‘The Well’: Compassion Koinonia Grace Wisdom Service Endurance At CPS, our pupils enjoy a rich and carefully planned curriculum. We use a two-year cycle of engaging themes to structure the topics and units, which follow the National Curriculum in all subjects. In addition to the core curriculum, which ensures that pupils acquire essential skills in literacy and maths, we actively seek opportunities for pupils to learn from an extended curriculum, enriching and broadening their experience and helping them to become well-rounded, pupils who are knowledgeable and confident in a wide range of subjects and endeavors. Our curriculum encourages a life-long love of learning. We believe that children learn best when they love what they learn, and so we plan exciting lessons that very often are cross-curricular so that learning from one part of the curriculum supports learning from another part - children then see how different knowledge and skills relate to each other, and with greater understanding, comes greatly increased enjoyment. Our curriculum will ensure that pupils make the most of their time at CPS in every possible sense - we are proud that the diocese has recognized our 'outstanding' support for pupils' spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development in addition to the support we provide for the acquisition of more academic skills and knowledge. We are proud of our curriculum and of the awards that we have received in the last few years in recognition of its success: 'Enhanced Healthy School' Status Arts Council Silver 'Arts Mark' Primary Science Quality Mark Silver Sing-Up Award International School Status As well as a topic-based curriculum based on termly topics, we plan a variety of one-off special themed weeks that give pupils the chance to immerse themselves in the focus for the week. We also have several very popular annual events that always capture the imagination of the whole school community. We have introduced both Philosophy for Children (P4C) and Growth Mindset thinking at CPS as we believe that is important that children can both express themselves articulately and confidently, and also understand how they learn best. These teaching methodologies are used in subjects across our curriculum and have proved very popular with the children. We value the experiences that pupils can gain outside of the classroom and so all of our year groups go on half-termly educational visits - these broaden horizons and get everyone excited about their topics, often leading to a lot of enthusiastic and high quality writing about their experiences on the pupils' return. Clerkenwell Parochial Church of England School has a long, proud, and, in many ways, unique history. Established in 1699, it was one of the very first charity schools, at a time when there were only 19 such schools in London and Westminster, and when of course there were no state schools as there are now. The school was then in the parish of St James and was originally founded by the parish church, was at one stage Parish Clerk at St James. At the turn of the twentieth century, Queen Elizabeth II visited the school to help it celebrate its 300th birthday. In 2015, the school is now 316 years old and still going strong. View full school
