Whether you are joining us from another school or moving up from our Junior School, everyone is new in Year 7. The Senior School is a place of great opportunity and we will expect you to be enthusiastic, think for yourself, and work hard. In return, you will become part of a famously warm, supportive family treated as an individual and valued for your achievements and efforts, whatever they may be. Years 7, 8, and 9 are the years to learn, make mistakes, study new subjects, and discover where your true talents lie. You will develop new skills and strengths, such as independence, which may come from traveling to school on your own for the first time, or deciding which of the many lunchtimes and after-school clubs and activities you want to join. You will develop a love of learning and have fun. The Sixth Form provides a stimulating and supportive environment where we will make sure you are ready for the challenges of life after Channing. You will take on greater responsibility within the School and become an important role model for younger pupils. Our new Sixth Form Centre (which opened in January 2015) is a truly stunning building that provides Sixth Formers with a place of their somewhere to work, socialize and enjoy a little independence from the rest of the School. Channing School is unique in providing an education based on the principles of two Unitarian sisters who, more than 130 years ago, founded a school for girls in Highgate, North London. In a changing world of uncertainty and pressure, girls find at Channing an oasis of calm purpose, where pupils are encouraged to think for themselves and to keep an open mind. Our academic results are among the best in the country and our most recent Independent School's Inspectorate (ISI) awarded Channing the highest possible ratings in all categories, concluding that 'The quality of pupils' achievements and learning is exceptional. Sometimes the greatest lessons are learned from the kindness of others and we recognize and encourage this, too. We are proud of our academic results at GCSE and we will encourage you to aim high. Pupils typically achieve 100% A*-C, (9-6) Grades as well as maintain their interests and passions. We want our pupils to maintain a broad academic base for as long as possible, so you will find we offer a wide choice of GCSE subjects. Flexibility is ensured as we have no set option pools and subjects are allocated each year from student choices. Our pastoral team will provide you with plenty of advice on making the best possible subject choices, taking into account any plans for the future. You must develop an independent approach to learning and so we put together a Study Skills program that will teach you how to organize yourself efficiently, work to deadlines and produce the best work you can. A carefully-considered program of homework and coursework will ensure you can manage your time successfully and confidently. It’s also time for you to adopt a more responsible attitude which will be helped by having your unique timetable and greater independence. Pupils in Years 10 and 11 play an important part in the leadership of the School and we enjoy watching you grow in confidence and maturity. We uphold our Unitarian heritage and encourage girls to develop respect, tolerance, and understanding of all faiths as well as individual and social responsibility. We treat everyone with respect and kindness. We try to think of others and be aware of their feelings. We enjoy the freedom to act, think, and be heard in a supportive environment. We try our best to contribute toward a positive atmosphere. We make the most of the opportunities we are given. The careers program at Channing aims to equip every girl with the knowledge, skills, and experience to make informed choices about her future. We do not expect all pupils to have a definite career plan at this stage, so the Careers program is geared towards enhancing pupils' knowledge of the world of work and how their experiences now can enhance their future career prospects. From Key Stage 3, girls are given information and guidance in PSHE lessons to help them begin thinking about the world of work and to build their skills such as teamwork, enterprise, and managing interviews. In Years 10 and 11, students are encouraged to think more deeply about their career directions. They undertake Morrisby testing which provides them with aptitudes and interests profile to help them in their decision-making process. They also develop their CVs, professional skills and are encouraged to apply for work experience. Similarly, in the sixth form, pupils take part in careers workshops as well as accessing careers information databases to help them make informed decisions about their university applications and alternative future routes.
