The School benefits from 200 acres including sports fields, woodland, high ropes course, and outdoor learning center. At Caterham, we benefit from inspiring Victorian architecture complimented with purpose-built facilities including our science complex, a Sports Centre with indoor pool, fitness center, and double space sports hall, a new Centre for Performing Arts encompassing two theatres and a dance studio, the Maggs Library and a dedicated Digital Innovation Centre. The School was founded in 1811, in Lewisham, by the Rev. John Townsend to provide a boarding education for the sons of Congregationalist ministers. The abolitionist and philanthropist William Wilberforce was a founding Governor of the School. In 1884 the School moved to its current site in the picturesque Harestone Valley in Surrey, having outgrown its London premises. In 1890, Caterham opened its doors to the sons of laymen and day boys. A statue of Rev. Townsend sits proudly at the front of the School and one of the main halls within is named after William Wilberforce. Caterham School has been co-educational for over 35 years. In 1995, the School merged with Eothen School for Girls to create a new independent co-educational foundation. We aim to cater to the needs of the individual, helping them to realize their full potential whilst giving them the relevant personal and social skills to play a positive role in their life beyond school. We never stand still at Caterham and are always looking at ways that we can improve still further. The emphasis is very much on teaching and learning and that is at the heart of all we do. We have an expanding and responsive curriculum aimed at enhancing choice and opportunity for students as they progress through the school. Our teaching is both innovative and challenging both in content and delivery where ICT is used throughout the school to bring the curriculum to life and to stimulate and engage students in their learning. As a comprehensive school for students aged 11 to 18, we are committed to discovering and nurturing the abilities of every child. Setting the highest expectations in terms of learning and behavior, we are justifiably proud of the academic achievements of our students, most of whom join our thriving sixth form, with many progressing to university. However, recognizing that some children’s abilities lie in other areas, we provide a wealth of opportunities and courses that allow every student to develop and showcase his or her unique talents. The school promotes a ‘can do’ culture in which everyone is encouraged to strive for excellence. Our progressive curriculum places great emphasis on building skills that prepare students for a successful career and a fulfilling life. Using our strengths in Sport and the Arts, we focus not only on acquiring knowledge but, also on developing qualities and skills that are valued in the workplace and the community. Students achieve most when they enjoy their learning, so we encourage active participation in the classroom and the involvement of parents and carers and home. The proactive setting of targets and monitoring of achievement underpins our aims to ensure that the students make the best possible progress. We uphold the traditional values of respect and tolerance, resulting in harmony in our multicultural community, where the contribution of every individual is valued.
