At Burnage, we believe that we must prepare our boys to be the best that they can be in several ways. We want them to achieve the best that they can academically. We must make sure that they learn well in every lesson, every day, and achieve their best possible exam results. Whatever your son’s ability, we must help him be his very best. BUT education is much more than just about passing exams. We want your son not just to have a keen sense of right and wrong but to choose right from wrong. We want him to be independent but not just to do whatever he wants but to act responsibly so that both his family and wider social benefit. We want your son to have compassion for the world to understand that we share a planet and have a responsibility to make it a better place. Of course, we all want our children to have good jobs, earn well and be happy but that is only half the story. If your son comes to Burnage, we will aim to teach him how to act compassionately and give back to his society more than he gains from it. We will teach him to behave sustainably, caring for those in our street, our town, indeed our world who have less. We have 3 goals for your son: to achieve his best possible exam results to behave responsibly always be a compassionate, caring individual. All parents/carers are required to apply to their home LA regardless of where the school/academy they are applying to is situated. Manchester residents will apply to Manchester LA. The LA will liaise with other Admissions Authorities in Manchester and other LAs where required. Manchester LA will inform parents/carers in writing of the outcome of their application. We firmly believe that Burnage Academy for Boys is an improving school and one that can offer an outstanding education to your son as confirmed by recent OSTED inspection reports. Burnage has a long-established reputation for excellence stretching back 70 years. Amongst our old boys, we can number Sir Roland Smith (Chairman of Manchester United Football Club), Lord Foster (the world-famous architect), Michael Croft (Founder and Director of the National Youth Theatre), and Manchester United's Wes Brown. Burnage Academy for Boys is not however an institution trying to live off fading laurels, but rather your local community high school striving to improve standards for academic excellence, behavior, performance, and dress. The school is committed to developing the most modern education based on traditional values of respect for others, hard work, and discipline. This is now being borne out by continued improvement in our results, especially at GCSE. We expect all members of the Academy to try to act in such ways that do not diminish, hurt or damage others with differing or even opposite views. We hope that all members of the Academy give each other sufficient time and space so that we may learn something from each other and that we find a common bond in a sense of shared humanity, shared human needs, shared aspirations, and shared hopes as members of Burnage Academy for Boys. We aim to develop a school where everyone is valued and can achieve success, enabling them to make a positive contribution to the community. To achieve our goal of every child being the best that he can be, we have to have the best possible curriculum. What most people not involved in education mean when they talk about the curriculum is the subjects that are taught. That is just part of the picture. The main reason that we chose to become an academy was that we wanted to control our curriculum. The national curriculum that schools other than academies have to follow, is old-fashioned, backward-looking, and does not prepare children for the world they will be going into. Our curriculum is rich, diverse, and will stretch the children - it is what we call the 'BAfB Three-Part Curriculum'.The curriculum includes all the subjects that you would expect your son to study but we will deliver these in ways that are relevant, exciting, and creative. We aim to deliver the national curriculum and to enrich it by giving opportunities that we believe are suited to the development of the students in this school. Boys are encouraged to appreciate scientific, linguistic, and artistic skills and to understand the historical, cultural, and environmental dimensions of life as well as further their innate aptitudes and abilities. We place great value on the school as a community, with a partnership between students, parents, and teachers. The school’s Equal Opportunities policy has guided many aspects of the code of conduct and discipline. Students are encouraged to see the school as “their school”, and to play a full part in developing a system of fairness and order this is done through the Year Councils, in which representatives of the students in each form contribute to make the school a better and more harmonious place for all. The school is committed to creating a warm, friendly and supportive environment for its students. The school has a ‘Praise and Reward’ scheme in operation in which the work, behavior, and attitude of students are monitored closely. Those who achieve well in the scheme can gain certificates, prizes, and an invitation to the school’s annual ‘Celebration of Excellence’ evening. School governors come from a variety of backgrounds. They are not expected to be experts in educational matters. That’s the responsibility of the headteacher and the teaching staff of the school. Burnage Academy For Boys draws pupils from the districts of Burnage, Didsbury, Levenshulme, Longsight, Rusholme, Fallowfield, Withington, Hulme, and Ardwick. The Academy was founded in 1933 and has served these communities for nearly 70 years. Over that time it has had a strong record of sporting, academic, artistic, and cultural success.
