- Bardstown is a residential special school registered as a children's home and maintained by the London Borough of Wandsworth for children and young people with severe intellectual disabilities who are on the autistic spectrum continuum. Many of our children and young people have associated communication difficulties and emotional/behavioral challenges associated with their disabilities and medical problems. We are a Unicef accredited Rights Respecting School. The School is situated on a large site in the seaside town of Broadstairs in East Kent. Our facilities include an amphitheater, library, swimming pool, parents flat, interactive soft play and sensory rooms, interactive bicycle track, pottery, all-weather football pitch, sensory garden, and extensive grounds and horticultural projects. The central purpose of our presence in the lives of others is to: Nurture Teach Sustain The experience of: Connectedness Companionship (what it is like to be and have a friend) Community of contribution Through the principles that make every one of us feel: Safe Loved unconditionally Loving towards others Engaged meaningfully in life We express these principles using: Words that are kind, uplifting, encouraging, and loving. Eyes that are warm and smiling. Touch that is gentle and respectful. A presence that is attentive and responsive to the person. And by reflecting upon our relationships in the context of how we have planned: The environment. The organization of life. How information is understood and acted on. The dialogue (listening, interpreting, and adjusting). The Culture of Gentleness can be supported by: Keeping our young people at the center of everything we do. Working harmoniously together so we can realize the goal of giving each young person a real life. Fostering a sense of community within Bardstown. The Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN) is an internationally recognized awarding body. It offers a wide range of curriculum programs for all abilities, mainly in the 11-25 age groups. Bardstown is registered as an ASDAN center and is currently running the ASDAN Transition Challenge, Towards Independence, Work right, and Bronze/Silver Awards. The Transition Challenge modules provide a framework of activities to develop and accredit independent living and personal skills. The Key Stage 4 curriculum embeds this learning alongside National Curriculum top-based learning. Children & young people can undertake activities with as much support as necessary this offers progression and a smooth transition into Key Stage 5 learning using Towards Independence. The Towards Independence Programme has modules encompassing PSHE, Careers, Citizenship, Key Skills, and work-related learning for young people in Key Stage 5. View full school
