  2. Two generations of students—many of them now citizens and community leaders—have studied at Great Basin College since it opened in 1967. Students of the new millennium, like those who studied at GBC before them, have access to contemporary knowledge in classes and the benefit of instructors who genuinely cherish the learning process. They will also benefit from an excellent library, the most current computing facilities, and well-equipped laboratories. They participate in a time-honored schedule of traditional classes and a rich array of short courses presented by active scholars from Nevada and the West. GBC students choose their mathematics, science, business, computing, humanities, social sciences, fine arts career and technical education, health science, and community education. Full-time faculty members, part-time instructors, and support personnel are mentors, friends, and advisers of the 4,700 students who study throughout GBC's academic year. Great Basin College enriches people's lives by providing student-centered, post-secondary education to rural Nevada. Educational, cultural, and related economic needs of the multicounty service area are met through university transfer programs, applied science and technology, business and industry partnerships, developmental education, community service, and student support services in conjunction with certificates and associate and select baccalaureate degrees. Academic freedom is an essential principle of higher education, facilitating the open exchange of ideas in the pursuit of knowledge. Academic freedom allows faculty, staff, students, and guests to research, discuss, and publish in an open academic setting, even when this "requires consideration of topics which may be politically, socially, or scientifically controversial" (NSHE Code Title 2 Section 2.1.2). Academic responsibility requires that such research, discussion, and publication be conducted civilly, following "appropriate standards of scholarship and instruction" (NSHE Code Title 2 Section 2.1.3). Great Basin College is committed to upholding the standards of academic freedom and responsibility, as described in the NSHE Code and the American Association of University Professors' "Statement of Principles of Academic Freedom and Tenure." The Northwest Commission regionally accredits the College on Colleges and Universities. GBC is a member college of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). Please see our accreditation web page for more information. The College has received approval by the State Board of Education for the Elementary and Secondary Education License Program. Great Basin College follows the curriculum of the American Welding Society (AWS), and graduates of the Welding Technology Programs may receive AWS certification. The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing and the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing programs are both accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (NLNAC). The Radiology Technology program is accreditated by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiology Technology (JRCERT). Great Basin College boasts a faculty whose backgrounds are as cosmopolitan and wide-reaching as GBC is small and personal. The many full-time and part-time instructors come to GBC from all walks of life, bringing their experiences and varied outlooks to enrich our instructional programs. Over the years, many of our instructors have received regional and national recognition for their efforts. In 1969, the Texas Legislature authorized an upper-level university accepting only junior, senior, and master's degree graduate students as part of an experiment in upper-level education in Odessa, Texas.
