The Alton is an inclusive community school, next to Richmond Park. We have extensive facilities that offer our children a wide array of fantastic, vibrant, and diverse opportunities. We are also home to a small Resource Base for children with moderate learning difficulties. We have a Breakfast Club and a vast range of co-curricular activities and after-school, clubs to ensure our children receive a rounded education. We want our children to love learning and enjoy school. We spend a great amount of time and energy ensuring our curriculum is exciting, thoroughly planned, and well resourced so that it provides our children with the skills and knowledge they will need for their future success in a changing world. We work hard to ensure that we develop our children’s self-esteem so they feel safe and understand their uniqueness and ability to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. We employ excellent teachers and support staff to maintain and further improve the quality of learning and teaching, and we monitor this closely. The Alton has improved very significantly over recent years and I am extremely proud of all our successes. The children, staff, governors, and parents have worked hard together to create a thriving, purposeful, and welcoming school. Students at our school strive to use excellent learner qualities throughout the curriculum and are praised when they use a specific quality. Excellent Learners: ask for help, like a challenge, listen well, learn with others, ask questions, are not scared to make mistakes, don't give up, are creative, can learn by themselves, want to learn more. Students understand what it takes to be an excellent learner and think about using excellent learner skills in each lesson. They have found this empowering and it has had an impact on their attitude towards learning and striving to succeed. Each day a student is chosen to be the ‘star of the day because they showed a specific excellent learner quality on the previous day. They are given a sticker for their chart to show they have achieved the use of that quality. Excellent learners are also recognized in weekly achievement assemblies and if they complete their excellent learner chart they will receive their bronze award. To achieve their silver and gold awards they will need to keep on using the excellent learner qualities. The new curriculum has clear expectations for all the subjects that we teach and we have reviewed our integrated curriculum to meet the new expectations and to ensure that we continue to offer enrichment to all our pupils. Teaching is carefully planned to follow the learning objectives for each subject. At The Alton, we believe it is vital to connect the pupils’ learning and we value our developing cross-curricular strategies and skills, which help to bring learning alive for our pupils. In this way, the natural links and relationships between subjects are made clear to the pupils so that their interest and enthusiasm for learning can be developed in a relevant context. The time allocation of subjects matches the curriculum emphasis and further details are available in school. We have worked hard to make our curriculum relevant to our pupils, developing an approach to all subjects to support our underlying aim to develop English, maths, and computer skills and The Alton School follows the national curriculum in all year groups. The Alton is a mainstream Primary School with a nursery provision and a specialist Resource Base for students with a statement of educational needs or an Educational Health Care plan.
