      1. Aklan State University (ASU) is considered one of the learning institutions in Western Visayas. It started as the Banga Intermediate School in 1917 through a resolution passed by the Provincial Board headed by Governor Simeon Mobo. The School became a farm school with the conversion of the Banga Intermediate School into the Capiz Farm School (Aklan being a part of Capiz then), which was formally opened in June 1918. Aklan State University is committed to offering degree and non-degree curricula in agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine, fishery, arts and sciences, engineering and technology, education and management sciences to produce globally competent professionals, leaders, and entrepreneurs through technological breakthroughs in research, the efficacy of extension, and production efficiency. There are five libraries located on every campus in Banga, Kalibo, New Washington, Ibajay, and Makato. The ASU Main Library maintains two satellite libraries, the School of Veterinary Medicine Library at the School of Veterinary Medicine Building in Banga, Aklan, and the BSN Reading Center at Provincial Academic Center (PAC) Building in Kalibo, Aklan. It also oversees the operation of the CAFES and CTE Reading Centers in the Main Campus. The Aklan State University (ASU) is composed of five campuses strategically located in Aklan's different parts. Each campus contributes to attaining the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the University. Dedicated to providing quality education to its students, the University ensures that its curricular offerings suit the students' current needs and the global market. The main campus in Banga, Aklan consists of five granting units, namely: the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), College of Teacher Education (CTE) and School of Management Sciences (SMS). The College of Industrial Technology (CIT) is located in Kalibo, the provincial capital, while the College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (CFMS) is in New Washington. The other units, the College of Hospitality and Rural Resource Management (CHARM) and the Teacher Education Center (TEC) are situated in Ibajay and Makato. The University is recognized as a portal of learning and as an active leader in research and extension. Its faculty researchers have made significant contributions in various fields, particularly in agriculture. Similarly, its extension projects have greatly benefited its adopted communities in Aklan and neighboring provinces. These efforts stem from the University's firm belief that learning occurs both inside and outside of the formal classroom. Hence, while learning theoretical knowledge in School, the students are exposed to the realities of life. They are encouraged to take part in the University's research and extension activities. The University firmly believes that there is unity in diversity. Although it is composed of many campuses, it is bound by one joint mission of achieving quality education and producing globally competitive graduates. True to its four functions instruction, research, extension, and production - the University never ceases to achieve its vision of becoming an Academic Pillar of Excellence (APEx) for sustainable development. As the enrollment increased considerably, the School was converted into a rural secondary school in 1928 and was named the Banga Rural High School. Through Republic Act No. 3439 authored by Congressman Jose B. Legaspi, the Banga Rural High School was named the Aklan Agricultural College (AAC) in 1963. A two-year technical course was first offered. Subsequently, the College was permitted to offer a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) program, with Agronomy and Animal Husbandry as major fields on May 19, 1966. In the seventies, the College further strengthened its instruction program and continued to expand its higher education services by offering other baccalaureate courses. Also, it offered to graduate and post graduate programs to cater to the needs of professionals who seek career and intellectual advancement. Having met the standards and requirements of an agricultural state college, the Aklan Agricultural College was converted into the Aklan State College of Agriculture (ASCA) on April 10, 1992, by Republic Act No. 7371, sponsored by Congressman Ramon B. Legaspi Sr. Under pertinent provisions of R.A. 7722 and R.A. 8292 and R.A. 8745 or the General Appropriations Act of 1999, four (4) CHED-supervised institutions were integrated ASCA in 1999. These were the Roxas Memorial College of Arts and Trades (RMCAT) in Kalibo, the Aklan National College of Fisheries (ANCF) in New Washington, the Northern Panay Teachers College (NPTC) in Makato, and the Western Aklan Polytechnic College (WAPC) in Ibajay. But better things came for ASCA. The consolidated version of House Bill 1548 authored by Congressman Allen S. Quimpo and Senate Bill 2236 was passed on final reading on February 5, 2001, and on January 29, 2001, respectively. On April 4, 2001, R.A. 9055 entitled "An Act Converting the Aklan State College of Agriculture in the Municipality of Banga, Province of Aklan into a State University to be known as the Aklan State University, appropriating Funds Therefore and for Other Purposes" was finally signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo which elevated the former ASCA to Aklan State University (ASU). Today, the School was "boys love to work, and pretty girls sing, cook and dance" has gone a long way from its obscurity in the good all days to its present national prominence. The Vice President for Academic Affairs shall be directly responsible to the President. The vice president for Academic Affairs coordinates with the President of the University and other Vice Presidents regarding the University's academic programs. The office provides effective liaison between the University and the academic community, both local, national, and international. It also initiates and undertakes the activities that should keep the University updated with recent academic affairs developments. The office supervises the personnel, budget and expenditures, and annual procurement planning, and recommends to the Office of the University President the allocation of funds and personnel appointment for the offices of National Service Training Program (NSTP), Admission and Registrarship, Student Affairs, Library and Information Services, and Curriculum and Instruction Development under her supervision.
