We are a small and vibrant primary school in West London. Our close-knit family community of staff, parents, and governors aim to ensure that all children are safe, achieve well and are happy and healthy. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that inspires a love of learning and targets individual needs. At East Acton Primary School we want every child to achieve their highest potential. We believe all children should acquire the skills to become independent, life-long learners. Within a safe and happy environment, we encourage children to become confident, reflective, and resilient individuals who aim high, persevere and achieve well. With the support of parents, carers, and the local community, we encourage children to be positive citizens who show respect and take pride in all they do. Our "values tree" is re-visited with staff and students each Friday in our weekly Golden Assemblies. One child from each class is selected for how they have consistently demonstrated one of our core values as shown on the branches of our "values tree". They then add a Golden Leaf to the appropriate branch on the tree showing their name and what they have done to demonstrate our school's vision and values. The National Curriculum covers KS1 and KS2 and builds on the work of the Foundation Stage Framework. There are 10 subjects in the national curriculum, English, Maths, and Science are core subjects. ICT is used to support all areas of the curriculum. History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music, and P.E (Physical Education) are the foundation subjects. R.E (Religious Education) covers the study of the world's major religions. Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship are also included. French is taught from Year 3 onwards. Children in the Early Years follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum. This is based on seven key areas of learning: Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices about food. Personal, social, and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others to form positive relationships and develop respect for others to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings to understand appropriate behavior in groups and to have confidence in their abilities. Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest. Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems, and describing shapes, spaces, and measures. Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology, and the environment. Expressive arts and design involve enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology. Children in KS1 and KS2 follow the National Curriculum. We plan half-termly topics and look for cross-curricular links where possible. English and mathematics are taught each day. Children in Year 1 and those in Year 2 who do not yet know their letter sounds follow a phonics scheme, Read, Write, Inc. French is taught weekly as a modern foreign language at KS2, and children are taught to swim in Year 5, visiting Acton swimming baths. Years 4 and 5 are currently having whole class ukulele tuition. All year groups from nursery upwards have the chance to attend an after-school club. Termly topic overviews are displayed outside classrooms and on the class pages of this website. While Acton High is proud to be able to trace its history back for more than a century, our recent successes are where we find the greatest cause for celebration. Summer 2017 saw Acton High’s best A-Level results and vastly improved outcomes at GCSE, particularly in English and Maths. The school owes its creation to local people's efforts to improve conditions for the growing number of young people in Acton. Over a century later and Acton High School remains at the center of the community. The following research into the school's history resulted from a special year-long collaborative project between the local Acton History Group, local historian Maureen Colledge, Borough Archivist Dr. Jonathan Oates, and Acton High School students and staff. Our approach to teaching and learning is firmly rooted in evidenced-informed practice. We consider what academic research tells us about what approaches have the most impact on student achievement. At Acton, teachers plan to learn experiences that focus on developing students’ expectations of what they can achieve, which is seen through the Stretch tasks available in each lesson. Teachers also prioritize students’ oracy and academic language, embedding time for quality classroom discussion in our lesson planning. We believe that students will make excellent progress when they are clear about their learning journey we provide students with the Steps to Success for each topic so students know how the different components of their learning fit together into a broader picture. Developing students’ metacognition is a vital part of our planning as we want to enable our students to think for themselves about their learning and how best to engage with a challenging task. Students’ progress is also maximized when teachers provide detailed and meaningful feedback after topic Checking Points and more formal Assessment Points four times a year.
