Our admissions for Reception class upwards are handled by The Hackney Learning Trust. Nursery applications are made directly to the school. You are very welcome to visit before enrolling your child. We organize Open Days during the school year which can be found on the school calendar and booked via the school office. Many of our children join Sir Thomas Abney in the Nursery, aged three. We trust in the expertise of our staff to provide outstanding opportunities for learning and encouragement for every child. At Sir Thomas Abney we show the children how to learn for themselves and to work with others. We provide quality feedback to all children and value their views too. We understand what it is like to be a child growing up in this community and work in partnership with parents to ensure children progress as fast as possible and achieve as much as possible. Sir Thomas Abney Nursery is a safe, caring, stimulating environment, where children can work and play with confidence. In the Early Years, children deepen their knowledge and understanding through play, talk, observation, planning activities for themselves, and reflection. We encourage children to explore, discover, experiment, problem-solve, and above all, feel happy and settled. At Sir Thomas Abney we believe that young children learn best through high-quality play experiences supported by high-quality staff. We have a strong emphasis on outdoor learning and children can play and learn together outside in all weathers in a large, engaging environment. We encourage children to make their own choices about what they would like to learn to develop their independence skills. We endeavor to inspire imaginations through our termly topics and provide a rich, stimulating place for children. Our school receives PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. At Sir Thomas Abney we are committed to creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment for children, staff, volunteers, and visitors. We promote a climate where children and adults will feel confident about sharing any concerns which they may have about their safety or the well-being of others. Pupil Premium is funding allocated to schools to boost the attainment of pupils from low-income families. It is intended to enable schools to provide targeted support to help children reach their full potential. Funding is allocated for children who are Looked after by the Local Authority (CLA) and for every child who has been registered for Free School Meals in the last six years. It is the responsibility of the governors to explain pupil premium expenditure to parents in the form of an annual statement. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils they are responsible for. We listen to children’s and parents’/carers’ voices. Our school behavior policy is clear that children are expected to contribute and co-operate, taking into account the views of others. Parent/carer surveys and children questionnaires are taken to inform our practice. The election of school council members in key stages one and two reflect the British electoral system and demonstrates democracy in action. In EYFS we support children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED) by giving them opportunities to develop their self-confidence and self-awareness, to make choices and decisions about what they want to explore and how they’re going to use the resources we have made accessible to them. (PSED). We consistently reinforce our high expectations of children. Children are taught the value and reasons behind our expectations (rules) that they are there to protect us, that everyone has a responsibility and that there are consequences when rules are broken. This is reinforced in different contexts. Whole school rules, playground rules, and class rules are reviewed regularly and reinforced through assemblies and circle times. Children all contribute to their class rules at the start of the year. Rewards are given to children who show exemplary behavior and agreed sanctions are in place for those who break the rules. In EYFS we learn the difference between right and wrong: about behaving within agreed and clearly defined boundaries and about dealing with consequences. View full school
