We are a Catholic, Jesuit college-preparatory school for young men, committed to our presence in the city of St. Louis and dedicated to building Christ's kingdom of truth, justice, love, and peace. We serve young men based on their ability to succeed rather than their economic circumstances.
Through a rigorous academic program, we help our students develop critical minds and a life-long devotion to learning that informs moral choices and transforms lives. In addition to assisting in the intellectual, aesthetic, social, and physical formation of our students, we help them develop compassionate hearts by fostering habits of personal prayer, reflection, and service for the Greater Glory of God.
Our mission is to create a school climate in which equity and inclusion are shared and celebrated guiding values for SLUH's Board of Trustees, administration, teachers, staff, and students. Inspired by Pedro Arrupe's call for students of Jesuit schools to become men and women for and with others, we seek to train men who will cross barriers created by society's ideas about race, gender, class, and sexuality in order to build God's kingdom of peace and justice.
Our Ignatian value of cura personalis grounds our efforts to make our school accessible to all students who can benefit from our program, particularly those from groups that have historically faced limited access to the high-quality educational experience we offer.
The academic enthusiasm and performance of our students at SLUH speak volumes about our program and the faculty-student partnership. Our students have achieved 42 top ACT scores, one top PSAT score, and one top SAT-2 score since 2005. Among other accomplishments, our school has been recognized as the top AP school in the State of Missouri and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. We are most proud of our excellence in "Cura Personalis" or care of the individual student with this in mind. Our faculty members challenge each student to achieve high-performance levels and services through classroom involvement and beyond. Similarly, our students challenge each other to excel in all areas.
SLUH's volunteer community service program (CSP) provides an excellent example of our students rising to new levels and becoming "men for others." In addition to the required Senior Project, in which the entire senior class devotes the month of January to community service, more than one-third of our student body participates in CSP. About 400 students fit time in their busy schedules to address the underserved' needs at more than 30 service sites in the area. CSP is our most popular co-curricular activity. Indeed, our students are committed to "helping souls."
The popularity of our CSP program has been supported at SLUH by an environment that fosters spiritual development and concern for others. Our class prayer services, retreat programs, confessions, liturgies, and daily prayers help strengthen our students and God's relationship. Each day we dedicate two minutes of reflective silence to the Ignatian "Examen of Consciousness," an exercise that allows students to pray and gain clarity on their daily routines. Our theology classes examine the texts of our Church and help engage students in moral decision-making.
SLUH, like our JSN companions, is a leadership school, providing our students as well as our community with the direction needed to impact the lives of others positively. Through a vibrant academic and spiritual environment, we will continue to preserve our heritage by cultivating our leaders of tomorrow.
Our students all have different goals, but they have one thing in common - they achieve them. SLUH provides them the opportunities to engage their intellect, find God in all things, pursue their interests, develop lifelong friendships and connections, and embody the Junior Billiken spirit. The knowledge and experience gained and the relationships developed to set the foundation for a bright future.
College Preparatory. Our essence, our mission, is to help students develop critical minds and a life-long devotion to learning that informs moral choices and transforms lives. Our four-year curriculum, along with our Advanced Placement program, is tailored to achieve this while providing the academic tools for success in college—and even the opportunity to accelerate a student's college education.
SLUH is about more than a dedicated faculty, a collaborative learning environment, and cura personalis, or care of the whole person. It is about students elevating one another to new levels. It is about educating young men in the Jesuit tradition and developing their gifts and talents in service to others—in college and beyond.
