Albuquerque Academy opened its doors in 1955 with 12 boys in grades 7 through 9, two teachers, and founding head. Albuquerque Academy is a non-denominational, coeducational, independent day school for approximately 1,150 students in grades six through twelve. The Academy offers students an education that is without equal in the Southwest.

The Academy prides itself on offering an educational program based on creative, independent doing and thinking. The school motto, Scientia ad faciendum, or “knowing through doing,” reflects an underlying philosophy of achieving knowledge through active involvement in learning.

The Academy’s educational program emphasizes six fundamental academic disciplines: English, history, mathematics, world languages, science, and performing and visual arts. Study in all six disciplines is required each year through grade 9. A decreasing number of requirements in the upper grades allows for a more extensive choice of electives.

Students are organized by grade into three divisions: Grades 6-7, Grades 8-9, and Grades 10-12. These groupings allow for small, close-knit, and nurturing environments to serve the needs and interests of all students. Each division provides students with a comfortable, supportive atmosphere in which to learn and thrive. The three divisions often work together, or in all-school assemblies and school-wide projects. The Academy’s 312-acre main campus includes the West Campus (Grades 6-7), and the East Campus (Grades 8-12).

We believe that children’s lives change when their natural passion for learning is nurtured and transformed into habits of life-long learning and reflection. We believe that the world changes as these children learn to serve country and community with wisdom, conviction, and compassion. In light of these beliefs,

    • We serve students of talent and character, offering them an education that broadens their perspectives, sharpens their minds, strengthens their bodies, and engages their hearts.
    • We commit to creating a caring, inclusive, and just community, using the geography and culture of our home in the Southwest to enrich our educational programs and foster creativity, personal balance, and a connection to the natural world.
    • We devote our resources to ensure economic accessibility to our students and to support the broader community through outreach and community service.
    • We entrust this mission to our graduates and successors as we preserve our resources and serve the generations of children.

At Albuquerque Academy, we look for the brightest students in the region, those with intelligence, character, and an eagerness to learn. We are serious about creating an educational experience that shapes sharp-minded students into purposeful, ethical, independent learners. Our students typically come from over seventy different schools throughout the greater Albuquerque region, and they all share one thing in common: a nearly insatiable curiosity. This trait forms the foundation of their academic lives.
