Academy at the Lakes was founded in 1992 as an independent, co-educational, non-denominational college-preparatory school. The school graduated its first class of seniors in 2002 and now has more than 300 alumni. To receive a diploma, Academy students must earn 24 credits, including 4 in English, 4 in Mathematics, 3 in Science, 3 in History, 3 in Foreign Language, 1 in the Arts, 1 in Physical Education, .5 in Personal Finance and 4.5 in elective areas, which most often include History, Mathematics, Science, and the Arts. Academy offers Advanced Placement and Honors courses in English, Science, Mathematics, History, Foreign Language, Computer Science, and Studio Art and 19 Honors level courses

Academy's student body is racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse. Nine percent of the Upper Division student body is African American, 10% is Latino/Hispanic, 11% is Asian or Middle Eastern, and 11% is International. The Academy's faculty includes 55 teachers. Half of our faculty hold advanced degrees, and 9% hold doctorate degrees. The school also employs a guidance counselor to serve all three divisions.

Students may participate in visual art, graphic design, acting, choral and instrumental music, and video production. Students may play a stringed instrument starting in second grade. They can continue with strings or switch to a band instrument in fifth grade and beyond. All 5th and 6th graders play a band or orchestral string instrument. Students and faculty present several stage productions throughout the year and a visual art show in the spring.

Academy's athletic department offers 13 sports for boys and girls and fields 40 teams in those sports at the Middle School, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels. More than 70 percent of Academy students in grades 5-12 participate in school-sponsored athletics. In keeping with its mission, the school has a no-cut policy for all athletics teams.

From PreK3 through senior year of high school, our students feel connected to their school. They experience the power that comes from knowing how very much they matter to the daily life and work of the community they animate. At Academy at the Lakes, all students have countless opportunities — opportunities to lead and to serve, to speak, and to be heard, to make a difference, to be necessary. Our inclusive school culture comes from our genuine commitment to forming meaningful relationships with each student and each family. Students at the Academy build confidence and poise through their involvement in their school. They develop a real understanding of their capabilities. They discover their authentic selves.
