Welcome to St Peter’s Church of England Primary School in Walworth. Our school is now entering an exciting new phase of development. All of our staff are committed to continuous improvement and providing the best opportunities for every child in the school. We recognize that this can only be achieved with the valued help and support of the whole school community.

St Peter’s is an inclusive school located in the heart of Walworth, SE17. We are proud to promote Christian values against the rich, cultural background that we are fortunate to find around our local area. We aim to give our children a varied worldview, enabling them to develop as responsible citizens. We strive to reach the highest possible educational standards within a caring, Christian ethos.

We want our pupils to feel proud to represent the St Peter’s Church community in all aspects of school life. We encourage our children to celebrate their academic achievements, to enjoy sporting success, and to support each other at all times.

It is important to us that the children can learn in a happy and safe environment. Motivation within the school is strong. We work to develop self-confidence within each child and make everyone feel valued.

The school recognizes the important role that it plays within St Peter’s Church. We share a wonderful working relationship with all associated with St Peter’s. Our children participate in daily worship and attend the Church each fortnight.

We are committed to working alongside the families in the local area, and greatly appreciate the continued support we receive from family and friends. We want parents to have total confidence in the school. We hope that by sharing weekly information via this website, the school will be able to communicate the high standards we are trying to achieve.

At St. Peter’s CE Primary School we take our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern multicultural Britain very seriously. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed, and lived out through the ethos and work of the school. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and, in particular, our RE, SMSC, and Philosophy lessons provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding. Children embrace concepts of, Mutual Respect, Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, Democracy, The Rule of Law, and Individual Liberty, with pride and we continuously encourage them to demonstrate a good understanding of the application of these to their own lives.

Through our curriculum, we ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community, during which these concepts are shown, through, for example, local community events and church events, class charity work, sporting events, a range of visits to and visitors from places of cultural and educational interests in and around London. Our school’s embedded values-based ethos gives them an excellent platform for embracing difference.

Our Ethos Values are promoted and celebrated in everything we do each term:

    • Respect
    • Peace
    • Joy
    • Love
    • Trust
    • Hope

Our integrated curriculum is broad and balanced and has been organized using a subject-focused/topic-based approach that incorporates progressively the key skills set out in the National Curriculum 2014. It is enriched with trips and visits, visitors to the school, growing vegetables and gardening, cooking, and extracurricular clubs and activities. There is a core text linked to the topic each half term, from which learning in English is derived.

We would like to welcome you to the Early Years Foundation Stage and hope that your child will be very happy with us at St. Peters. We hope that the time your child spends with us will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

‘Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfill their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe, and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.’

Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships, and thrive. The three prime areas:

    • Communication and language
    • Physical development
    • Personal, social, and emotional development

We begin using the Letters and Sounds program in Nursery by exposing children to a range of everyday sounds and encouraging them to explore noises around them. From Reception, we begin to formally teach the graphemes, blending, and segmenting skills required for children to become competent and fluent at decoding. Phonics is taught across Reception and Key Stage 1 daily to ensure children are mastering these skills.
