Mount Carmel R.C. Primary School is a split-site, Voluntary Aided Primary school, with a 65 place Nursery that serves the parish community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Blackley. It has a strong Roman Catholic ethos. Everything we do is influenced by the values enshrined in our Mission Statement.
At Mount Carmel R.C. Primary we are grateful to welcome each child as loved by God. Proclaiming Christ’s message of hope, we live as a caring family of faith and in mutual respect. We celebrate our uniqueness, embrace our differences, create space for forgiveness, and journey towards a shared understanding of God’s plan of love for each of us. Because our children are listened to and valued, they feel they belong and thus continue to achieve and grow.
At present, 94% of our pupils are baptized Catholic and the development of this faith commitment in the children is a fundamental part of the work of staff and Governors. We enjoy a close connection to our parish community, which supports and encourages us in many ways. Families are supported in their faith development through the Baptismal and Sacramental Programmes.
The academic year is punctuated by meaningful and child-centered liturgies and celebrations that follow the Church’s year. Parents and visitors comment on the welcoming and caring atmosphere throughout the school. We are proud of our outstanding and committed team of teaching and support staff, who aim to achieve the highest possible standards.
The staff and Governors of the school seek to cater to the needs of all pupils, both academic and pastoral. Children with particular needs, such as Looked After children and those with Special Educational Needs are very well catered for. We work in co-operation with a wide range of outside agencies to support individual children and families. Our staff team too work very hard to create a curriculum that enables our young people to achieve at the highest levels. We are very aspirational for our children and families. We value greatly the support that parents give us and feel privileged that you entrust us with the education of your children.
Mount Carmel is a friendly and happy school where everyone treats each other with the utmost respect. We offer our children the opportunity to develop a deep friendship with God as they grow in faith as unique and special individuals. Our wonderful children are tireless in their energy and enthusiasm to learn new things. They work very hard because we have the highest of expectations for them.
Our school has a comprehensive list of school policies to help you understand the rules of the school that helps make Mount Carmel a safe and loving home of learning. Please take your time to read carefully through our policies so that you can have a better understanding of how our school is run, with the safety and wellbeing of our children, central to everything we do.
Catholic values and beliefs are lived and expressed within the school in all subjects. The school aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, to include all aspects of a child's learning. We seek to achieve the highest possible standards in all areas of school life.
Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Primary School in the trusteeship of the Diocese of Salford. It is maintained by Manchester LEA and is a voluntary aided primary school. The school’s Governing Body is the admission authority and is responsible for taking decisions on applicants for admission. The school’s role is to participate in the mission of the Catholic Church by providing a curriculum, including Catholic religious education and worship, which will help children to grow in their understanding of the Good News and the practice of their faith. The school will help the children develop fully as human beings and prepare them to undertake their responsibilities as Catholics in society. The school requires all parents applying for a place here to understand and respect this ethos and its importance to the school community. This does not affect the rights of parents who are not of the Catholic faith to apply for a place here.
Admission to the school will be made by the governing body under the stated parental preferences it receives subject to the following criteria which will be used to form a priority order if there are more applications for admission than the school has places available. Admissions to the school will be determined by the Governing Body. Religious Education is a core subject at Mount Carmel. The National Curriculum requires that the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Computing, together with the foundation subjects of Technology, History, Geography, Art, P.E, and Music be included in the curriculum.
Children learn to develop their social and relationship skills and a healthy lifestyle through P.H.S.E (Personal, Social and Health Education) activities. Programs of study are planned to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum focussing on the National Numeracy and Literacy strategies and include the ongoing assessment in all areas of the curriculum.
At home, you must monitor your child's exposure to the internet. We have seen a big increase in children setting up social media profiles, YouTube profiles, and playing online games that are not age-appropriate. At school, we do all we can to filter out any inappropriate websites and images through our Smoothwall and Safe Search settings. We also include Online-Safety as a compulsory topic in our Computing Curriculum for all classes Y3-Y6.
