Our school is in Stratford, the home of the London 2012 Olympics. We are situated close to the Olympic development, Stratford Town Centre and Stratford City. On-site is our Children’s Centre which offers a wide range of services to the community We pride ourselves on being a diverse school. We have over 500 children from 34 countries representing 60+ different languages.
Well, we are widely recognized as being pioneers in curriculum innovation, carrying out international educational research for the benefit of this school and many other schools within the locality.
We are renowned for our award-winning outdoor environment (Cluckingham Palace, Nature’s Garden, Negril Beach, etc) which provides unique learning opportunities for our inner-city students. We are one of only a handful of schools that hold the prestigious Royal Horticultural 5 star Award.
We are a model school for Oxford University Press in the teaching of the successful literacy program, Read Write Inc. In addition to our academic success, we are a model school for integrating technology. We continually achieve one of the highest attendance rates in Newham because our children love coming to school. Many pupils take part in music tuition after school hours, as well as maths and English classes after school, on Saturdays and in the holidays.
Finally, we are a school that lives its motto to prepare children for the future. We inspire our pupils with unique opportunities e.g. meeting Major Tim Peake, astronaut Alan Titchmarsh, horticulturalists international research Professors, and of course Olympic athletes, a legacy from our involvement in the 2012 Olympics. We ensure our children have ambition, that they are successful learners, and that they enjoy each day that they spend with us at Maryland.
Maryland Primary School continues to lead the Critical Thinking Skills project in Newham and this will be an important focus of our work this year, alongside our long-term plan about integrating ICT into the curriculum in new and innovative ways. As a result, we now have our stand-alone website, wE-PUBLISH, established to showcase children’s writing across the school.
We have embarked on an exciting journey using the web-based tools provided by Google. We hope to see an improvement in a wide range of areas, such as pupil progress, engagement, independence, resilience, and collaboration. Maryland is one of the first primary schools in Newham to start using these tools and is active in supporting schools interested in exploring the benefits this approach has.
Maryland Primary School is a multi-cultural school that takes seriously its duty of laying the foundation for preparing children for adult life beyond formal education in Britain. Maryland pupils are given the opportunity of practical experience of democracy in the yearly Head Boy and Girl elections. Candidates campaign for their post and hustings are held before elections take place. At Maryland School, we believe that by promoting fundamental British Values, every individual within our school community will continue to be treated with courtesy, fairness, and respect. We hope that our pupils will continue to recognize the importance of equality, inclusion, and diversity as they move toward becoming an adult in modern Britain.
Maryland School is an inclusive school that ensures adequate provision and access to all areas of school life for all pupils including those with special needs. We acknowledge that pupils may have special educational needs either throughout or at any time during their school career.
