Lubavitch Senior Girls’ School is a strictly orthodox, small secondary school for girls only, based in Stamford Hill, Hackney. The school became voluntary-aided in June 2012 and there are approximately 120 students on roll. It serves the Orthodox Jewish community and caters specifically, but not exclusively, to families who follow Chabad Lubavitch customs and traditions. Most students come from North and North West London, and some girls travel from the surrounding areas including Edgware, Luton, and Wimbledon as well as further afield such as Oxford, Brighton, Solihull, Dublin, and Bournemouth. Lubavitch Senior Girls' School aims to inspire its pupils to become true and responsible representatives of Torah Judaism and Chabad Chassidism as expounded in the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory.
Admission to the school is open to any girl eligible as a Jew by the ruling of a recognized Rabbinic Authority.
LSGS promotes British values of democracy, rule of law, liberty, tolerance, and mutual respect as well as preparing our young women for life in modern Britain. The school encourages pupils to further their education in Seminary and further education, to enhance their moral and spiritual status, and to be able to make a meaningful contribution to society at large.
Lubavitch Senior Girls’ School approaches the promotion of Fundamental British Values in line with the Government’s PREVENT theme of the anti-terrorist strategy CONTEST. These British Values are democracy individual liberty the rule of law mutual respect tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Each is defined below and placed in a school context with examples. It is, without question, everyone’s duty to ensure they do not undermine these fundamental British values as detailed in the current Teacher Standards Part Two: Personal and Professional Conduct.
A signed note from a parent or guardian must be produced on return to school, stating the reason for any absence or late arrival. Students arriving late, without a suitable note, may be sent home. Where the absence was due to a contagious illness, a doctor’s note must be produced stating that the illness is no longer infectious. Students are not permitted to leave the premises during normal school hours. Dental or medical appointments should be made outside of normal school hours, or at least at the beginning or end of the day. Notice of these must of course is given in advance. In exceptional cases where you are considering taking a holiday in term time please complete this form and return it to school at least 14 days before the date you wish to remove your child from school.
Learning is bolstered and sustained in the presence of a positive and cheerful atmosphere. This occurs when our pupils act within established guidelines of behavior. Although school discipline may involve challenging components, the overall goal is to develop good Middos in our pupils and to prepare them for a lifetime of working and co-operating with others.
The parent's role in discipline is vital. We appreciate the insight and support of parents when working to develop self-discipline in our Pupils. Our rules are reasonable and designed to breed a positive learning environment. When these rules are followed.
On entering the Sixth Form at LSGS, students start to consider their future beyond school. We aim to give them the independence, confidence, and knowledge to succeed in whichever path they choose. During their time in the Sixth Form, we help our students to learn to take responsibility for themselves - academically and personally - in preparation for the greater freedoms of life after school. They enjoy a range of freedoms and privileges but within the support of the school structure.
The School Play is an important part of the life of a student at the School. The Play is generally presented annually, in the Winter term. The show is a chance for girls to show their creative side and is always an enjoyable night. There are also various Musical Shows and Presentations which might take place at appropriate times in the School calendar.
The values which are promoted at LSGS are based on Orthodox Jewish teaching, expressed in the Torah, and particularly as expounded by Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson (the Lubavitcher Rebbe, 1902-1994), who sought to demonstrate the relevance of Torah to our modern age. These values closely coincide with fundamental British Values.
Proper Torah education acknowledges that Judaism should not be lived in a vacuum. The Torah and its Commandments are for the real world and are to be practiced in the real world. Indeed, Torah is fulfilled in the best way when it informs one’s interaction with the world and with all of its inhabitants. Hence the Jewish Studies section of the school curriculum supports and enhances the General (secular) studies, and vice-versa. An important aspect of Jewish teaching concerns ‘Middos’, which can be translated as ethics and values. Middos education permeates the life of the school, and fully supports, and is supported by, the promotion of Fundamental British Values.
