Welcome to Highgate School. A few prospectus-style words to sum up our aims for our pupils: we want Highgate to be a happy, cohesive community where pupils enjoy life to the full, value their friendships, and achieve balance in their lives. We want them to leave us for places at academically demanding, selecting universities, here or abroad, with the ambition, motivation, skills, and staying-power to study independently and make a success of their studies. We want them to be emotionally and intellectually ready for the world of work: creative problem-solvers rigorous and imaginative thinkers balanced risk-takers team-players and leaders. We want them to enjoy childhood to the full and to have developed and pursued passions, both academic and extra-curricular. We want them to have grown as individuals, conscious of the advantages they have enjoyed and of the opportunities and obligations such advantage brings. We want them to be open-minded and able to challenge prejudice wherever they encounter it. We want them to carry on their learning away from Highgate and regardless of exams. We want them to be successful and employable, but not at the cost of happiness and balance.
Since 1565, Highgate School and the London around it have seen many changes. One aspect of the School, however, has always remained constant: we are a charity, and every generation of Cholmeleians has been committed to living up to what that means, to strengthening and building on our charitable foundations.
One priority is to ensure that able children who are not Highgate pupils can have stimulating teaching in the rigorous academic subjects that are ultimately required by top universities and employers.
Provide a total of seventy-eight pupils across the school with full-fee BURSARIES, most of whom will join us at age eleven, so that children for whom Highgate is the right school can join us, even if financially it would not otherwise be possible for their parents or carers to consider us. Through our links with local primary schools and our carefully targeted communications, we are reaching out to children and their families to make it possible for them to have the life-changing education that will meet their intellectual needs and unlock for them the doors to lifelong opportunities.
The academic curriculum at Highgate forms the very core of what the school is about. Of course, we place great value on our co-curricular activities and we are very proud of our pastoral care, but our chief aim is to encourage each pupil to maximize his or her personal and academic potential at every level.
Highgate boasts a rich collection of co-curricular offerings. Whether a pupil is interested in playing an instrument or singing in a choir, performing in a drama production, playing a sport, or joining a society or club, there is something for everyone.
Each pupil is placed on arrival in Year 9 in one of the twelve Houses. The House is the social and pastoral group within which each will remain throughout their time at Highgate. The house system establishes a basis for lasting friendship and each house has its own distinct identity forged in a varied program of friendly inter-house activities and competitions.
Pupils in Year 7 and 8 are placed into a Form Group of around 20-22 pupils under the care of a Form Tutor. Pupils are encouraged to take part in inter-form competitions and activities and to contribute to the weekly assembly and tutorial program. The pastoral care of the pupils and the work of the Form Tutors are overseen by the Head of Lower School, who is supported by a Head of Year 7 and a Head of Year 8. The pastoral teams in Years 7 & 8 aim to ensure that all pupils enjoy a successful transition from the world of primary education to the environment and opportunities of secondary school.
