Hawarden High School traces its history back to 1606 when a single-classroom grammar school was established with £300 left by a resident named George Ledsham. Some 400 years later we still very much hold traditional values at the heart of what we do.
We are committed to ensuring that each pupil benefits from the very highest standards in learning and teaching to support them in the development of their essential skills and talents to the full. We are very proud of the fact that many of our students gain entry to their first choice university, others choose to enroll on courses at local further education colleges whilst some embark upon work-based training opportunities with prestigious local employers.
We are very proud of our school, which is successful and oversubscribed. Outcomes for our pupils, in terms of A-Level, GCSE, and End of Key Stage 3 results, have this year once again been excellent, enabling us to exceed both the local and national averages, with this year’s GCSE results representing the best in the history of the school.
The school is well resourced, with over 500 computers. Digital projectors are fitted to all teaching rooms and there has been much investment in interactive whiteboard technology in recent years. Having gradually extended our wireless network, further works have been undertaken to provide 100Mb links throughout the school. Our Technical and Vocational Faculty is equipped with industry-standard hardware, including laser cutters, a 3D printer, and an optical router.
Hawarden high school is a community, co-educational, comprehensive day school for pupils aged 11-18 years. Currently, there are 1132 pupils on roll, including 160 in the sixth form. Whilst teaching is undertaken through the medium of English, we exploit opportunities to develop pupils' bilingual competence through the use of the incidental welsh and bilingual display.
