We work hard to develop opportunities for our children and in the last few years, it has gone from strength to strength. We provide an exciting and inspirational curriculum working with experts including an Artist in residence and a Musician in residence to widen our curriculum offer. In addition to the teaching of Spanish as an additional language, we also have a professional Sports coach. Gorringe Park Primary finally became a three-form entry school in September 2017 with the third-year six-class opening. Gorringe Park Primary School serves children from three to eleven years old (Nursery - Year 6).
The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There are time and space in the school day and each week, term, and year to range beyond the national curriculum specifications. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding, and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.
Pupils of compulsory school age in community and foundation schools, including community special schools and foundation special schools, and in voluntary aided and voluntary controlled schools, must follow the national curriculum. It is organized based on four key stages3 and twelve subjects, classified in legal terms as ‘core’ and ‘other foundation subjects.
The reading scheme we use in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 is called ‘Floppy’s Phonics’ (fiction and non-fiction). The scheme of books is banded into color levels, which relate to the level of difficulty of the text. The books are also linked to the phonic sounds and ‘tricky words’ we teach in school. They provide a good opportunity for the children to practice and apply their phonic knowledge. Reading at home is an essential way for children to develop their ability, confidence, and passion for reading. At Gorringe Park Primary our aim is for every child to not only develop the essential reading skills needed to access the curriculum, but to have the enthusiasm and confidence to become lifelong readers.
Gorringe Park Primary School receives a Pupil Premium Grant for each child who is entitled to receive Free Schools Meals or who has been entitled over the last six years, and for any Looked After Children.
Sports Funding adds to the investment Gorringe Park makes in sports provision. We believe in using our funding to provide a professional sports coach from Progressive Sports to work with our children every week and new from September 2017 we have also employed ARTIS to do music, dance, and movement with our children.
The impact of the additional funding can be seen in the increased participation in sporting events entered by the school as well as several of our older children now playing for major football clubs. The school works closely with a team of Governors to support, monitor, and improve the school. The profiles below give you some further information on each of our Governors.
Schools have a key role in safeguarding children and this is done by teaching children how to be safe. Teaching children British values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect help children to protect themselves against radical narratives as they grow up.
DITTO is a free online safety (e-safety) magazine for schools, organizations, and parents to keep you up to date with risks, issues, advice, and guidance related to keeping children safe online, to enjoy and learn about technology. A new edition is released approx. every 6 weeks.
This year we have shown how the sustainability of our sports continues with the change to a new coordinator and we welcome Mr. Medcalf to the role. The Government in England has provided additional funding of over £150 million per annum since 2013/14 to improve PE and school sport in primary schools. From September 2017, the funding will be doubled to enable primary schools to make further improvements to the quality and breadth of the PE and sport they offer. The money goes directly to Head Teachers to enable them to improve the quality of PE and sport for all children. Each school receives £16,000 plus £10 per pupil in years 1 to 6. At Gorringe Park, we will receive £20,570 in 2017/18. This money will go towards ensuring that each child is exposed to high-quality PE and also to ensure that child knows how to live an active and healthy lifestyle Conditions of grant: The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, in 2017 to 2018 academic year, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
