Every year we have an arts week where our children experience the whole range of the field of art from rock to classical, soaps to Shakespeare, circus to musicals. This is reflected in our arts mark gold award. We are a vibrant, alive school because of our wonderful children.
At Gilmour Junior School our children take part in a daily act of Collective Worship which has a weekly theme. Each theme actively promotes the British values of democracy, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Where appropriate, we invite speakers to talk to the children about an aspect of our Collective Worship theme.
English is the basic language of communication in our society and is the foundation for almost all the learning which takes place in our school. We use a full range of teaching techniques to ensure our children become as confident and competent as possible in the skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. At Gilmour Junior school our planning for English is based upon medium-term planning for English developed by the Liverpool Authority English Team.
Maths is taught in mixed ability class groups. At Gilmour Junior school our planning for Maths is based upon medium-term planning developed by the Liverpool Authority Maths Team. Maths is also taught through practical activities and games, as well computers and calculators. Practical Maths is always extremely popular with pupils of all ages.
Through computing, children learn to understand how computers are programmed and how to write simple programs. Children are also taught how to keep safe in the digital world.
Pupils are shown how to develop basic knowledge and understanding of life and living processes, materials, and their properties of physical processes. Skills are developed by undertaking investigations, predicting outcomes, recording, and concluding.
Children with special educational needs are ones whose needs are different from or in addition to those of others of the same age. A need may be short or long-term and maybe a specific learning problem or of a wider nature.
The Liverpool Counts Quality Mark is a program run by School Improvement Liverpool, targeted at improving maths results for the city’s children. Its main aim is to tackle the negative attitudes towards numeracy and mathematics which are prevalent in many areas of our society.
We promote a culture where we understand the need for good numeracy skills and mathematics qualifications. We want to ensure our children know how important these are for their social, financial, health, and employment aspects, both now and in the future.
In school, we will all be working hard to encourage pupils to make connections in their numeracy and mathematics lessons to real-life contexts and within other areas of their school experiences.
Our specific aims for the pupils of Gilmour Juniors are:
- To raise the profile of Numeracy / Mathematics across the school including its use in other subjects
- To create a positive ethos about mathematics
- To understand the importance of mathematics as a life skill and the role it plays in future life choices
- To share and celebrate the enjoyment of Numeracy / Mathematics
