At Earlsmead we encourage children to become independent learners. We aim to provide all children with a curriculum that is relevant and which is broad, balanced, and appropriately differentiated. We believe in providing a curriculum that promotes pupils’ intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and personal development and prepares them for the next stage of their education and their future lives as responsible citizens.
Ours is an inclusive school and children’s center where individuals with diverse needs are integrated into our community. Our school and children’s center reflects and promotes respect for our many and varied communities and languages. We aim to make everyone aware that they can both benefit from and contribute to our multi-cultural, multi-faith, and multi-lingual community. In this, we foster an ethos of mutual respect.
We are committed to working with and are supported by outside agencies. We both welcome and encourage all their involvement. In our school, children aged 2-5 follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, which is carefully planned to help the children progress towards achieving the knowledge and skills needed for compulsory education at the age of 5.
We have a broad, balanced, and creative curriculum that engages and motivates pupils of all abilities. We encourage children to learn enthusiastically through using a range of teaching and learning strategies and through exciting projects, such as keeping hens, helping the polar bears, imagining the story of Noah and the Flood, performing in poetry slams with Michael Rosen, and writing stories for an incredible flying library!
Earlsmead implements the Government’s National Curriculum. The curriculum enables pupils to develop independent, cooperative, and decision-making skills that help them to learn. Reading, writing, and maths are used to support learning across the curriculum.
We have made a huge commitment to technology in our school. From Nursery to Year 6 we have a range of up-to-date equipment such as iPads, interactive flat panels, and Chromebooks.
At Earlsmead we ensure that children are acutely aware of the responsibilities that come with having rights. Children develop a thorough understanding of personal responsibility and develop independence in managing relationships and behavior. Through our whole school approach to restorative justice, we enable children to develop the language and strategies to solve conflict and right wrongs.
At Earlsmead we offer a range of exciting opportunities for children to be leaders throughout the school, and they understand that the rules they have created for their classes permeate through all activities and events. Children also understand their behavior and regard for the rules extends beyond the school itself, such as acting as school ambassadors while on school trips. This understanding means that teachers can organize fascinating school trips secure in the knowledge that children will get the same from them as they do from learning opportunities within school.
We teach our pupils to know that they have boundaries within which they make choices safely through the provision of a nurturing mindset and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand, and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, for example through E-Safety and PSHE lessons.
