The school opened its gates to the community in 1992, marking this the 24th year. We boast a large school population of 1230 learners.

All of our 48 educators are fully qualified, permanent educators. We also have 5 service staff and 24 security that has the backing of the Chubb Rapid Response unit. All of our Learners do Pure Mathematics in Grade 10. We also offer 15-course packages which include: Engineering, Graphics and Design, Travel and & Tourism, Hospitality Studies, Dramatic Arts, Physics, Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Geography to name a few. We are thus able to offer such a wide range of courses to cater to the various needs of your child/ward.

Hillgrove Secondary School commits itself to the provision of quality of education for all persons we will:

    • Foster high aspirations
    • Create a safe and disciplined environment conducive to learning
    • Equip all persons to participate effectively with all South Africans
    • The ethos of the school strives to achieve excellence in academic endeavors, sport and sportsmanship, and cultural activities.

The school aims to provide a supportive and structured educational environment where learners are encouraged to reach their potential academically as well as in sporting and cultural activities.

Our Matric pass rate has been 90% and above for the last 4 years. Many former learners have pursued illustrious careers ranging from Medical Doctors to Chartered Accountants to pilots, from Finance Managers to Chefs, and from Chemical Technologists to Engineering, after passing through our portals. This demonstrates that we have a band of dedicated educators, who build the foundations, enabling learners to cope at the various tertiary institutions. We have also received numerous accolades for progress from the Department of Education.

We are the only high school in the area that hosts after-school matric tuition classes until 16H00 daily and also on Saturdays. At present we have managed to secure the assistance of Dr. Xolo, a senior lecturer in Mathematics, to conduct classes with small groups of learners in Grade 12 in Mathematics. Many of our staff members have been selected to conduct workshops with educators from other schools.

Traditional school sports are not only restricted to athletics but include activities such as soccer, netball, volleyball, etc. Many afternoons are reserved to accommodate fixtures. Eg. Grade 8 plays on Monday from 2:30 to 3:30.This is a compulsory sports program. Our grounds can accommodate a fully-fledged soccer match. We have enhanced our sports program to include touch rugby and aerobics. We also offer athletics, volleyball, netball, and soccer.

A new media center was launched by a representative of Ms. Peggy Nkonyeni, our MEC Education in 2014. We also have big screens featured together with photocopying facilities. One of the attractive features of the media center is that we have computers and internet access for learners. Our media center is managed by a qualified full-time librarian.

For grades 8&9, we offer computer lessons in our new IT Labs, which accommodates 42 learners per period. There is no extra cost involved in this. We aim to ensure that our learners are computer literate.

The school is currently installing a state-of-the-art internet and telephone system through NEOTEL and will be a fully-fledged wi-fi zone via this system. Important information is also communicated to you in this way. The use of tablets will be promoted as study material can be uploaded.

In 2015, we refurbished our main hall with porcelain tiles, a new ceiling, a new stage area, upgraded toilets, and kitchen facilities. (Enquire about discounted hall hire rates for parents and learners). The outsourced school tuck shop caters to the needs of all learners and educators with a wide range of foods available.

Several organizers (eg. Sofie Darbar) provide basic sandwiches for learners who come from disadvantaged homes. Our grade 8 intake for the academic year 2016 will be an advantaged position since 2016 marks our 25th Anniversary. Immense planning is underway to commemorate this event: Fun days, concerts, dinner dances and various others have been planned to make this milestone. We would like you to be part of this historic time by enrolling your child at our school.
