Ahuroa School enrolled its first pupils in 1888, on a site well removed from the present one. It was situated on what is now known as Hawkens Road, although at the time, that road did not exist. In 1930, the local settlers' desire to have the school situated on the main road now established along the valley floor resulted in a new school being built on the present site. The new site placed it in reasonable proximity to the small district center based on the railway station, post office, and general store (see Our Community), with the community hall adjacent to the new school.
The 'historic' building, now used as the staff room, was a redundant school building moved down from the Kaipara Hills to provide a second classroom when the Ahuroa roll exceeded forty, the trigger at that time to warrant a second teacher, about 1939-40. The primary classroom was later moved some meters to the south and incorporated into the present classroom complex when it was built about 1965-66. The schoolhouse would have been built about 1946-7.
The elementary school, now redundant, was later moved and is still there today, on the hillside overlooking the eastern junction of the Komokoriki Hill and West Coast roads. Albeit no doubt now much modified, it must, at least in part, be one of the oldest buildings in the district to have been continuously occupied."
Our innovative country school is one of the best little schools in NZ, and we are incredibly proud of it. We are nestled in the picturesque Ahuroa Valley, just a 15-minute drive from Puhoi or Warkworth. We offer a relaxed and peaceful environment where learning is tailored to each student's individual needs, with a nurturing and caring approach. Families are recognized as being vital and active partners in student's daily learning, and the entire community is recognized as the learning environment.
Catering for students from year 1 through to 8, we offer excellent teacher to pupil ratios and a significant one to one support. We promote academic excellence in reading, writing, and maths. However, we believe learning should not be constrained to the four walls of the classroom. We provide our students with many opportunities for real-life learning experiences outside of the classroom.
One of the first things that strike visitors to our school is the welcoming and positive atmosphere. Students are strongly encouraged to acknowledge and celebrate each other's differences and support each other's weaknesses. We have open-door policy parents and families are welcomed and encouraged to visit and share in their child's learning.
We have four classrooms. Our two newest rooms are open and adjoining to allow for classes to merge throughout the day. All our classrooms are designed to inspire learning and encourage collaboration while catering to our students' individual needs. We strive to provide a QLE (quality learning environment) within each classroom. However, we believe that our "outdoor classroom," found within our wider community, provides a much more effective QLE for our students.
Our sports facilities include a swimming pool, an adventure playground, a grass sports field, and an all-weather astroturf court. Our swimming pool is open to our families and community outside of school hours. Keys are $80 per family for the summer season.
Our purpose-fitted technology room includes a full kitchen, two large movable stainless steel workbenches, purpose-built shelving to store equipment and materials for fabric and textiles, art, and hard-tech (including wood and metal tech). It also includes storage areas for IT equipment (including a class set of NXT Lego Robotics) and is the home of our radio station.
We strongly believe learning should not be constricted to the four walls of the classroom and strive to make full use of invaluable resources available to us in our local and broader communities. With school as 'base camp', learning experiences can extend past the boundaries of place, time, age, and learning methods. Our fantastic community has helped us create our outdoor classroom—one where a sense of peace and belonging flow between classroom and nature.
