Our co-educational, independent school for Early Learning to Year 13 is dedicated to providing a holistic education that develops our students academically, socially, and emotionally. We instill a passion for learning and encourage our students to embrace global opportunities. In 2019, our students received outstanding results following November’s Cambridge International exams, including several Top in the World awards and a 100% A level pass rate.
Excellent teaching is at the heart of high-quality learning. Students should be motivated by teachers who love their subject, are highly skilled in communicating their knowledge, enjoy what they are doing and gain immense pleasure from working with young people. The ACG Parnell College Values are the ‘common language’ that shapes and guides our attitudes, conduct, and conversations. They underpin our efforts to be wholehearted in all that we do and to accept responsibility willingly.
Building on the outstanding reputation of ACG Parnell, we are now opening an early learning school where children aged three months to five years can get a head start in life and gain the essential building blocks for future learning. Progress is underway for our state-of-the-art early learning school. We are now taking enrolments and undertaking family interviews. The address of the Early Learning School is 110 Park Road, Grafton.
We aim for all our early learning students to become confident and involved learners, who grow and develop. We provide flexible, open-ended activity-based experiences, where learning is often in the form of projects so children have opportunities to explore, observe, hypothesize, question, and discuss to clarify their understanding. We introduce children to a love of learning at a young age by creating opportunities for them to explore, experiment, solve problems and express themselves as individuals.
Our program is inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy and the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whariki. The structured approach to learning which includes music specialist teaching will ensure children are well prepared for the next stage of their educational journey – primary school.
In middle school, students are taught by specialist teachers and get the chance to enjoy our subject-specific learning facilities. Our courses are flexible and individualized to meet your child’s needs. Strengths and weaknesses are identified, and students are offered opportunities to extend their talents or receive extra support.
These years form the basis for senior study and qualifications. Work covered previously is consolidated, and new subject areas are developed. The program is broad-based to develop the diverse skills required for the senior-level study.
At this level, homework is set regularly and ongoing assessments are conducted in each subject. Your child will sit school examinations in terms Two and Four.
Comprehensive reports on your child’s progress are provided twice a year. Your child’s teachers will explain and discuss the contents of these reports at parent-teacher interviews, or by phone or email at other times. In addition, Achievement Conference Days are run as an opportunity for your child to individually set goals with their teacher.
Gifted and talented students are extended through a personalized approach to ensure each student is working to their full potential. The opportunity to advance to higher levels in Mathematics in Years 8, 9, and 10, and Science in Year 10, is available to students if teaching staff feel they will benefit. Advanced Year 10 students will have the opportunity to sit at Cambridge IGCSE subjects.
The school’s strong focus on literacy and numeracy skills continues in middle school. Students apply they're developing creative and critical thinking skills in writing and speaking, and ICT (Information and Computer Technology) is integrated into most courses.
At this level, students start specializing in subject areas. With the help of teaching staff, your child will choose some of their courses. This is usually five IGCSE subjects, plus Leadership (one period per week). AS subjects are available if your child meets the entry criteria.
Senior students will be able to choose between the two internationally recognized curricula we offer: Cambridge and International Baccalaureate (IB).
Students studying the Cambridge program work towards their A-Level qualification. The A-Level grade is calculated as a combination of a student’s marks from AS Level and A2 Level. AS is a qualification in its own right – your child may stop studying a subject at the end of AS if they wish. A2 denotes the second year of a full A Level course. ACG Parnell College provides a broad range of subject areas, with 23 AS courses and 18 full A Level courses.
Most students at this level take four subjects a year. Year 12 courses usually consist of all AS subjects, while Year 13 courses may include either AS or A2 subjects.
The IB Diploma is an alternative study pathway with a strong global focus. The curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the core program, which consists of Theory of Knowledge, Creativity, Activity, Service, and the Extended Essay. The diploma takes two years to complete.
