Two American mothers, married to Indonesians founded Pelangi in 2006 they also had a background in education and non-profit management. These parents wanted to start a school for their mixed heritage children in the place they called home, Ubud.
The vision was to create an inclusive, bilingual school, catering to mixed children as well as an ex-pat and Indonesian children. The aim was that Pelangi would be a place where mixed kids, their Indonesian cousins, and their international friends could all feel equally secure. Pelangi planned to enroll 75% full-tuition-paying students, and 25% low-income scholarship recipients, ensuring cultural and economic diversity. The aim was also to provide a school in the local area of Ubud without children having to endure long journeys to the south of the island to schools outside their local community.
Today over 150 children attend Pelangi School and we have evolved into a respected bi-lingual international standard school with a distinct community feel, providing a high standard of education to its multicultural students. Our cohort of students represents 32 nationalities from across the globe. The staff team of 40 is lead by a core team of experienced western and Indonesian educators and includes administrative professionals as well as operational staff.
The original Pelangi vision is still strong and we pride ourselves on being a school where Balinese, Indonesian, and the international expatriate community co-exist together as one family. At Pelangi school, we believe in honoring the culture of childhood so that children are engaged and enthusiastic. Pelangi School is a place where children love to learn!
This means that the curriculum is both age-appropriate and a ‘living’ curriculum. Our chosen curriculum is the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The values of the IPC curriculum are humanitarian, secular and celebrate our multicultural environment. The curriculum is made ‘living’ through our ‘holistic – head/heart/hands’ approach.
At Pelangi School, we respect the whole child, different phases of childhood, and different individual needs. We are an inclusive school. We understand that healthy and happy children need to develop their physical, emotional, and cognitive abilities to be well-balanced. Children need to do. Children need to feel. Children need to think.
We educate their heads, their hearts, and their hands, through imitation, imagination, and inspiration. Specifically, when children engage their hands through imitation, they develop their will. When children engage their hearts through imagination, they develop their feeling. When children engage their heads through inspiration, they develop their cognitive capacity and individual motivation to innovate. When we educate their “heads, hearts, and hands,” we are educating the thinking, feeling, and willing capacities of each child-The whole child.
