Our school is nestled on the Rideau Waterway's shores – a UNESCO World Heritage Site - in Merrickville, Ontario. In this safe, quiet, and clean village, students can focus uninterrupted on their studies. Home to nationally and internationally renowned artists and named "The Most Beautiful Village in Canada," the warmth of this historic town provides an idyllic family environment for learning. Just 45 minutes from Ottawa, the nation's capital, our students have access to Parliament Hill – the seat of our federal government, our national museums, national art gallery, national performing arts center, Rideau Canal – the worlds longest winter skate-way, two universities, two colleges, and the spectacular National Capital Commission's Gatineau Park.
Our boarding students enjoy luxurious rooms with an en suite bathroom, fine dining, and some of the best teachers this country has to offer. Our day students share classes with students worldwide, providing a dynamic and truly international education. With an average class size of 10 students and over 140 hours of in-class instruction per credit course, our students excel and reach beyond their grasp. Individualized and focused attention, academic differentiation combined with personal and social growth result in students who become courageous, resilient, and compassionate global citizens.
Merrick Preparatory School inspires students to reach beyond their grasp. Naturally curious, we engage students to be inquisitive. We instill the courage to face adversity, compassion to be globally minded, and a sense of responsibility to be community-oriented. Our graduates are courageous, compassionate, global citizens ready to enter world-ranked English-speaking universities, actively acquiring excellent academic and English language skills.
In our safe and inclusive environment, we dedicate ourselves to understanding each student's learning needs to ensure their success. We teach to add to the global good. Sensible self-denial, compassion, and giving one's utmost effort will result in positive contributors and builders of global civil society. Our graduates are citizens of the world, broad in their perspective and compassionate in their outlook. Our students' happiness and fulfillment measure our marker of success.
Merrick Preparatory School ensures our students are prepared to enter world-ranked universities. Since our founding in 2012, we have maintained a 100% post-secondary placement rate, with over 93% of our graduates gaining entrance into their first-choice university. MPS students develop disciplined study habits, acute critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and become globally aware.
Offering the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum and the #1 world-ranked Ontario Secondary School Diploma, MPS takes a pedagogical approach surpassed by none. Our teachers expertly tailor course delivery to meet our students' academic, cultural, and linguistic needs in small class sizes averaging ten students.
Our English immersion program allows students to increase their English language skills in preparation for grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 and seamlessly integrate into the North American education system. This program's success is due to the integration of academics, language acquisition, and community involvement. MPS will recommend 1, 2, or 3 semesters of the ESL Foundation Program based on a student's English competency. Students are continuously evaluated to determine a suitable time to transition into our academic programs.
Our ESL summer camp is designed to enhance English language acquisition through a mixture of engaging in-class academic programs and fun out-of-class activities. All instructors are Ontario qualified and registered teachers with English as a second language specialized training and certification.
Activities include visiting Provincial and National Parks, touring historical sites including the Canadian Parliament, swimming in crisp, clear Canadian lakes and rivers, touring a university biology research station, and fun activities such as zip-lining and visiting the local zoo, working with a magician and various other feature attractions. This program is intended for groups of 10 or more students (plus one chaperon per 10 students) for a minimum of 2 weeks during July. Our Summer School Program is designed for students who want to improve their grades and understanding in a course they have already taken or reach ahead to earn credit and lighten their academic load for the upcoming year.
Students participate in fun Summer Camp activities and take on a leadership role under our skilled educational staff's guidance and supervision, further improving their communication, presentation, leadership, and English language skills. This experience presents students with the opportunity to earn all 40 of the community service hours required to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Our teachers are certified, and registered teachers in Ontario and have specialized English training as a second language.
