Founded in 1935 by Miss Isobel Travers and Miss Audrey Morphett, Fahan School offers programs from Kindergarten to Year 12. Miss Travers and Miss Morphett believed that young women could achieve anything they wanted to. Our founders' ideals and aims were reflected in the motto they chose, "Light Come Visit Me." Light was not just sunlight but rather "enlightenment," which is the purpose of education.
At Fahan School, we strive to create an inclusive community and progressive educational environment where we can prepare and educate each of our girls to achieve their full potential, empowering them to become the women who impact the world and who fulfill every promise of their future.
Our Vision for Fahan School in the 21st Century aims to continue to be recognized and respected as the most outstanding and pre-eminent school for girls in Tasmania and be a preferred educational environment for students both within Australia and overseas. Fahan is a school that looks towards the future while respecting the traditions and hard work that have laid the foundation for our first 80 years. The Fahan Strategic Plan 2018-2020 builds on the fine work that has been done during the life of our previous plan. Our Strategic Plan provides clear aims, goals, and specific initiatives designed to shape our Schoolschool's future and its role in developing confident and educated women.
Strategic planning is a process that defines a broad vision for the direction of the school, identifies strengths and weaknesses, anticipates future challenges, and directs the actions necessary to make the vision a reality. Although forward-looking, the strategic planning process affirms the school's core principles, assumptions, and values. It then builds on that foundation to assure that Fahan is prepared to confront the dynamic forces shaping our culture, institutions, and the world.
As Principal of Fahan School, Tony leads a team of dedicated professionals who provide excellence in education to girls in Tasmania, a hallmark of Fahan's 80 years. He believes that there are many advantages that Fahan has to offer, including an outstanding record of academic achievement, its stunning location on magnificent grounds, small class sizes, and the excellent relationships that develop as a consequence between the students and staff.
Tony has taught at several Tasmanian schools in a career spanning 38 years. Before taking up his position at Fahan, he was Deputy Principal and Head of the Senior School at Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston. After training as a Mathematics and Social Science teacher, Tony developed an interest in Information Technology, returning to study to complete his M.Ed with a Computers in Education dissertation. He taught Information Systems and Computer Science to Years 11 and 12 students for many years.
A member of the Tasmanian Teachers' Registration Board for seven years, Tony is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. From 2011 to 2015, he was Chairman of the Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools. He is proud of and humbled by, Fahan girls' achievements, both past, and present, across a wide variety of fields and believes that their academic results bear testimony to this.
"Fahan girls have consistently achieved one of the highest median ATAR scores in the state. In Art, Music, and Drama, the girls are encouraged and supported to produce the highest quality work. As a small school, the girls' determination and spirit consistently produce results above expectations while in sport. Fahan is a strong community, and we value and cherish all members' support, be they parents, alumni, staff, or students. It has been a great privilege for me at Fahan to meet and talk with so many former students and hear of their affection for the school and how it has helped them achieve their goals in life. It is my aim that this will also be true for our current students.
We believe the school's supportive environment gives our girls the confidence to explore options in the knowledge that they will be mentored and nurtured to achieve their best at the same time as enjoying the experience.
