The Illinois School of Professional Psychology, the first of the American Schools of Professional Psychology, was founded in the 1976 by a group of psychologists, educators, and other professionals who called for a clinical psychology degree that emphasized teaching and practical training over the research-oriented approach of the traditional PhD degree. This effort ultimately led to the creation of the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree, which we still offer today. The third school, the Medical Institute of Minnesota, brought to the table its own rich heritage, which began when it was established in 1961 in response to the emerging needs of the medical community, with the goal of preparing skilled allied healthcare personnel for careers in the booming medical technology fields. Tennessee State University is committed to excellence and has been consistently listed in the U.S. News & World Report’s“Guide to America’s Best Colleges” for more than a decade. Founded in 1912, TSU is a comprehensive, urban, co-educational, land-grant institution in Nashville, Tennessee. The university has been served by seven presidents, including Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, who is currently serving as our eighth president. Our Nashville home offers two locations—the 500-acre main campus nestles in a beautiful residential neighborhood along the Cumberland River, and the downtown Avon Williams campus sits near the center of Nashville’s business and government district. In 1909, the Tennessee State General Assembly created three normal schools, including the Agricultural and Industrial Normal School, which would grow to become TSU. The first 247 students began their academic careers on June 19, 1912, and William Jasper Hale served as head of the school. Students, faculty, and staff worked together as a family to keep the institution operating, whether the activity demanded clearing rocks, harvesting crops, or carrying chairs from class to class. The school gained the capacity to grant bachelor’s degrees in 1922, reflecting its new status as a four-year teachers’ college. By 1924, the college became known as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal College and the first degrees were awarded. In 1927, “Normal” was dropped from the name. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the college grew in scope and stature under the charge “Enter to learn go forth to serve.” When Frederick Humphries became TSU’s president in 1975, Nashville was also home to a second public four-year university.The Knoxville-based University of Tennessee began offering extension credit in Nashville in 1947 and expanded its programs throughout the 1960s. By 1971, it was accredited as a degree-granting institution that occupied new quarters at the corner of Tenth and Charlotte Avenues. But in 1968, TSU faculty member Rita Sanders filed a lawsuit, which became known as Geier v. Tennessee, alleging a dual system of higher education in Tennessee based on race. On July 1, 1979, the case was settled by a court order merging the former University of Tennessee at Nashville with TSU. As president, Humphries was the first to face the challenge of maintaining the balance between TSU’s role as one of America’s preeminent historically black universities and its emerging status as a comprehensive national university. The Geier v. Tennessee case, however, remained alive for 32 years. Rita Sanders Geier was joined by the U.S. Department of Justice and by TSU professors Ray Richardson and H. Coleman McGinnis as co-plaintiffs in the suit. After numerous court-ordered plans failed to produce progress, all parties achieved a mediated consent decree that was ordered by the court on January 4, 2001. Today, Tennessee State University offers 38 bachelor’s degree programs and 24 master’s degree programs and awards doctoral degrees in biological sciences, computer information systems engineering, psychology, public administration, curriculum and instruction, educational administration and supervision, and physical therapy. Although Friends University was officially founded in 1898, our history goes back to the mid-1880s when the Christian Churches of Kansas began to construct a building west of Wichita that would hold more floor space under one roof than any other educational facility west of the Mississippi River. Garfield University opened its doors for classes in 1887. The University had 500 students enrolled for the first year and 1,070 for the second year. After graduating from its first and only senior class, Garfield University closed its doors in 1890 due to financial difficulties. The school was reorganized and opened again in March 1892 as Garfield Central Memorial University. It closed for good on Nov. 18, 1893. Throughout its history, the University has remained committed to our central core: the arts and sciences. Transferring to Brescia University from one of Kentucky's community and technical colleges (KCTCS) is simple, using the Articulation Agreement. Brescia University's Articulation Agreementawards any graduate from a KCTCS institution with an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree a minimum of sixty (60) transfer credits (but no more than 67), and junior class standing. An Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree will also satisfy forty-eight (48) hours of Brescia University's General Education Requirements (GERs). The student completes at least one class in world history, foreign language, literature, fine arts, philosophy, and religion. Any of these courses not completed at a KCTCS institution must be completed at Brescia University. Also, at least six (6) upper-division credit hours (300- or 400-level) of Brescia's General Education courses must be completed as part of the student's free electives. Courses with a grade below a C are not accepted. A transfer student who has a D in the first course of a required two-course sequence and a C or higher in the second course must retake the first course unless s/he can demonstrate competency, in which case the requirement will be waived. In 1873, Bennett College had its beginning in the unplastered basement of the Warnersville Methodist Episcopal Church (now known as St. Matthews United Methodist Church). Seventy young men and women started elementary and secondary level studies. In 1874 the Freedmen’s Aid Society took over the school which remained under its auspices for 50 years. Within five years of 1873, a group of emancipated slaves purchased the present site for the school. College level courses and permanent facilities were added. In 1926, The Women’s Home Missionary Society joined with the Board of Education of the church to make Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C., formerly co-educational, a college for women. The challenges that were overcome to establish Bennett demand that today’s challenges be met and overcome to ensure her survival. For 144 years women have found Bennett to be the ideal place to foster the constant rhythm of ideas. Each student’s individual need for self-expression and desire for achievement is constantly nurtured. The College fosters a strong respect for every student. Today, in the midst of a very active renaissance, Bennett is preparing contemporary women to be well educated, productive professionals, informed, participating citizens, and enlightened parents. In 1964, Bauder College was founded as a fashion and etiquette school. The 1960s were a time for head-turning fashion, where the popular culture began to embrace new directions. Moreover, Bauder College was there, entering the field as it took its new, dynamic footsteps. From its roots, Bauder College believed in offering an alternative to high school graduates seeking career training. Program offerings expanded in the 1970s to include interior design and fashion design. Program expansions continued, addressing both core business areas and growing fields that came with the modern digital age. Bauder College is housed in two buildings comprising over 70,000 square feet of space in the Northyards Business Park, a site designated on the National Register of Historic Places. The College took the name of the house, Belhaven, in honor of Hamilton's ancestral home in Scotland. Fire destroyed the original building in February 1895, but, with the help of Jackson citizens, the College reopened in the fall of 1896 on the same site. Dr. Fitzhugh served as president until he died in 1904, after which his heirs sold the College to Dr. J. R. Preston. He served as president until the College was destroyed again by fire in 1910, at which time Dr. Preston donated the title of the College to the Presbyterian Church. First Presbyterian Church in Jackson advocated on Belhaven's behalf with the Synod for establishing the school in an undeveloped section of Jackson, which is now the campus home on Peachtree Street and around which Belhaven neighborhood grew up.
