  4. Sainte-Anne has been using three sources of renewable energy on its Church Point campus: a solar thermal system for domestic hot water, a gasification biomass furnace, a 50-kW wind turbine. After two years of operation, the project has proven to be a resounding success, both from an economic and from an environmental point of view: Université Sainte-Anne has dropped its heating oil consumption, which in turn has reduced its CO2 emissions. The combined impact of the 118 solar panels and the wood chip furnace has enabled the institution to save 50% of its energy costs, thanks to the cost difference between biofuels/solar energy and conventional fuels. The wind turbine has reduced the institution's power bill. Based on this success, a second wind turbine has been erected and we expect to have it on-line very shortly! The local economy has benefited from this green approach: sustainable jobs have thus been created for local people involved in harvesting, processing, and transporting the biofuel. Under their professor's supervision, volunteer science students are involved in habitat-creation programs intended to help protect a number of threatened species. They have thus built and set up several nest boxes for swallows and black ducks in several locations on the campus. Students are also involved in follow-up procedures during the summer. In September 2012, a new national shorebird observation program will begin: the marine ecology class will count shorebird species every seven days and the results will be entered in a national database. Be it on campus or in the community, students in SIFE Sainte-Anne (Students in Free Entreprise) and in the Green Team are involved in many actions designed to promote green practices: organizing a Green Conference in collaboration with the municipality cleaning up the campus and its sea shore creating and publishing a Green Guide on ways to reduce our energy consumption collaboration between waste management services in order to improve waste sorting within residences, etc. Our students are involved in sustainable development and it shows. In its continuing quest for excellence, our institution has adopted a strategic plan for 2013–2018 that will ensure that it continues to thrive and prosper. This plan is the outcome of a wide-ranging consultation process. The student population, staff members, alumni, and community and government partners have all joined forces to build a future for our university. Considered a flagship institution for the Acadian community of Nova Scotia, Université Sainte-Anne plays a determining role in the cultural and socioeconomic development of our province. Its specificity and uniqueness do not, however, mean that it is immune from the many challenges ahead. The demographics of the Acadian and francophone population, the rural-to-urban migration of our youth, the competition with other post-secondary institutions for the recruitment of students, and the current economic situation – affecting the ability of university graduates to find jobs – are all having an impact on our institution. We must, however, remain optimistic and proactive about our university's future. Université Sainte-Anne the foremost destination for Acadian, francophone, and francophile students. 7. To live this unique study experience, which will allow them to progress in their career, but also to develop as individuals. The beautiful building on Empress Avenue houses both the Dominican University College and the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Convent, where the Dominican Friars live. Every day, College students are in contact with the Dominicans, not only in courses as teachers and students, but also in the cloister, the library, the cafeteria and at church. Studies take place against the back drop of every day religious life. This environment is conducive to learning, research and the sharing of ideas. Dominican University College (DUC) is a first-class research university for students who want to think through deep and complex questions in philosophy and theology. We offer a personalized learning environment and encourage rigorous, critical thinking in a spirit of openness. Our small-class sizes and innovative teaching methods make DUC an ideal place for students seeking to become expert researchers and well-rounded people. DUC is heir to an 800-year tradition that traces its roots to the first universities across Europe the Dominican Order established houses of studies (studium generale) in Paris, Cologne, and elsewhere in the 13th century. Continuing in this tradition, DUC promotes the study and development of rational inquiry and Catholic theology through its undergraduate and graduate programs in philosophy and theology, with particular strengths in the study of Ancient Greek philosophy, German Idealism and the thought of Saint Thomas Aquinas. A peaceful sanctuary at the heart of a bustling city, DUC’s campus is conveniently located within a few blocks of Parliament Hill and the Supreme Court. Beyond an active nightlife and great restaurants, university life in the Nation’s Capital offers many opportunities for hearing internationally renowned speakers and witnessing some of Canada’s best arts and culture. DUC is a member of a strong global community of Dominican houses of studies at prestigious universities throughout the world such as the Blackfriars, Oxford, the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Berkeley, and l’École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem. International students come from all corners of the globe to study with us, while Canadian students take part in a variety of programs and exchanges. Our research in social justice and the relief of poverty takes an active form through educational experiences in developing countries. A hallmark of the Dominican Tradition is to engage with contemporary political, ethical and social issues. Our students go on to work in political offices, in the military as ethicists or chaplains, to teach and to practice law or medicine. Critical thinking skills, the ability to perceive clearly the meaning of the written and the spoken word, the ability to hold together a variety of perspectives when forming opinions: these are all valuable and sought after assets which our graduates take with them into the workplace. In addition to the skills gained from studying in an environment focused on academic excellence, the desire to engage meaningfully with others and with society stems from DUC’s focus on human formation. A humble stance in the face of all that is yet to be discovered fuels a passion for learning. This model of the studium generale was adopted from the very beginning by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), which was founded at the same period (1215) by Domingo de Guzmán. Established in Paris in 1229, the first studium generale of the Order, where Thomas Aquinas himself received his basic formation in philosophy and theology, was followed by four others in 1245, in Cologne (Germany), Bologna (Italy), Oxford (England) and Montpellier (France). Inheriting this long and rich intellectual tradition, the model has always been maintained by the Order throughout the centuries. In Canada, the institutional centre of studies of the Order was established in Ottawa in 1900 and was recognized officially as studium generale ten years later. In 1967, after having been granted a civil university charter by the Ontario Government, it became the Collège dominicain de philosophie et de théologie. Thereafter, it welcomed students other than Dominicans and granted them civil university degrees in philosophy and theology. In May, 2012, DUC formally affiliated with Carleton University. Shortly thereafter the institution officially adopted the name Dominican University College - Collège universitaire dominicain. In cooperation with Carleton University, DUC successfully completed its Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP) in March, 2013. All graduate and undergraduate programs in philosophy and theology are fully accredited and funded by the Ministry of Advance Education and Skills Development. All degrees granted by DUC are now conjoint with Carleton University. View full university

  20. A small, public university with over 2,000 students from around the world, the University of South Carolina Beaufort is a dynamic and vibrant academic community that serves the Lowcountry and beyond. The Historic Beaufort campus sits on the Intracoastal Waterway in downtown Beaufort, S.C., where you can live and study close to artsy shops, restaurants, and the waterfront—all in a historically rich town with so much to offer. With a history dating back to 1795, this campus features a Center for the Arts that hosts exhibits, concerts, theatrical events, and other performances—all in a historic, scenic, and vibrant community. Students can also live on campus at the Grace White House, a newly renovated residence hall that has a full-sized kitchen, bedrooms, and in-house laundry. Led by Chancellor Al M. Panu, the University has three campuses situated in the heart of the Lowcountry—the Bluffton campus in Bluffton, South Carolina, the Beaufort campus in Beaufort, South Carolina, and coming in 2018, the Hilton Head Island campus on Hilton Head Island, SC. With its heritage dating back to Beaufort College in the late 1700s, USCB continues to play a large role in the powerful futures of our students, faculty and staff, and communities we serve throughout the Lowcountry. USCB’s mission charges us to respond to regional needs, draw upon regional strengths, and prepare graduates to contribute locally, nationally, and internationally. What does that actually mean? It means… that we are here to raise the bar. We are here to instill in the next generation a penchant for critical thinking. We are here to elevate the standard of living for those who will come after us and who will shape the communities they will inhabit. We are here because the complex needs of this state and this nation demand an educated, informed, and discerning populace. We are here because the Industrial Age long ago gave way to the Digital Age. And, if we are to live in a knowledge-based society with a high-tech global economy, we have an obligation to educate, train, guide, and inspire students to rise to a level never before required of them. Universities are drivers for capital investment because workforce development spurs enterprise and, therefore, job creation. Median lifetime earnings for college graduates are twice those of high school graduates. And a bachelor’s degree has been a proven buffer against unemployment in economic downturns. For instance, 80 percent of jobs lost in the last recession were lost to workers with no post-secondary degree. At the University of South Carolina Beaufort, our financial aid counselors are here to guide you through the process. As you start thinking about paying for college and applying for scholarships, remember that USCB is the most affordable four-year institution in the state of South Carolina. Last year, USCB students were awarded $17.7 million in scholarships and aid, with 91 percent of new students at USCB receiving some sort of financial assistance. To help meet your educational costs, grants, scholarships, loans, and other programs are available. Please review the various funding options under Federal Aid, Grants, Loans, and Veteran & Active Duty Benefits. You are also encouraged to apply for USCB scholarships. Please review the Scholarship Process for instructions and deadline information. Financial aid & scholarships awarded to USCB students in the 2015-16 academic year totaled $20.1 million. Your financial aid package, along with your personal and/or family resources, will assist you in meeting your educational expenses. Eligibility for various programs is determined by the results of filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Financial Aid). A federal formula is then applied to the data you submitted on your FAFSA, and the results of this formula provide the calculations that determine how much you and your family should be able to provide toward meeting the cost of your education. (Your financial need is calculated by subtracting your expected family contribution from your cost of attendance.) Advancement, a new direction, unfinished business — there are a lot of reasons to pursue a four-year college degree. With the convenience and affordability of the University of South Carolina Beaufort and Palmetto College, it’s hard to come up with reasons not to. Your well-deserved salary increase is attainable. The ability to better support your family is no longer out of reach. Your time is now! Students who have completed 60-hours of course work can complete all Program and Major requirements online. You can access your coursework from home or the office… or you can pick it up and take it with you to your son’s soccer game, your hair appointment or the nearest Starbucks! And because Palmetto College online degree completion programs are part of the USC system, your diploma will carry the same credibility and weight as any other four-year degree from the University of South Carolina Beaufort. The academic setting at USCB is challenging. We expect a lot from our students, and we believe in their talents and potential. So it only makes sense to provide you with all of the resources, facilities, technology, and personalized support we can so that you can make the most of your experience. From academic advising, to mapping out a curriculum that matches your future goals, to free professional and peer tutoring, to state-of-the-art libraries, to IT support, to a Writing Center that offers extensive instruction and guidance, our academic support services will give you all the resources you need to achieve success. USCB is proud to provide to offer an on-site bookstore - Shark's Cove Bookstore. 22. Welcome to The Institute of World Politics (IWP), an independent graduate school founded to fill a major national need: to supply professional education in statecraft, national security, and international affairs that no other school offers and that few people acquire except through an entire career of on-the-job experience. Today, America and other nations dedicated to preserving decent civilization are facing grave threats to peace, security, freedom, human rights, and prosperity. Addressing these threats requires extraordinary leadership that is knowledgeable about international realities and skilled in navigating a dangerous global strategic environment. IWP is dedicated to educating and developing such leaders. It is the only school whose curriculum covers all the arts of statecraft – the instruments of national power. The Institute offers five M.A. degrees in its Master's Degree Program, 18 Certificates of Graduate Study, and a Continuing Education Program. The Institute of World Politics is a graduate school of national security and international affairs, dedicated to developing leaders with a sound understanding of international realities and the ethical conduct of statecraft, based on knowledge and appreciation of the founding principles of the American political economy and the Western moral tradition. As a professional school specializing in the art of statecraft, The Institute of World Politics teaches the use of the various instruments of power. The Institute, however, recognizes that power, like liberty, can be misused and abused, and therefore its use must be accompanied by responsibility. As Theodore Roosevelt observed, “To educate a man in mind but not in morals is to educate a menace to society.” Thus, the Institute’s educational philosophy is guided by a recognition that education in ethics and civic virtue is a necessary prerequisite to the responsible conduct of statecraft. The Institute’s philosophy proceeds first from a recognition that peace and security are the essential prerequisites for all functions of civil society, and that nothing in our public life –- neither domestic governance, commerce, the exercise of civil liberties, nor organized charitable work -– is possible without them. The Institute offers Master's degree, certificate, and continuing education programs with a professional curriculum covering the vari¬ous elements of statecraft. Its curriculum also includes an interdisciplinary foundational course of study of the relevant elements of comparative political culture, Western moral precepts, practical political economics, and political and diplomatic history. For general guidance on graduate studies in the United States, international students can contact an EducationUSA advising center. EducationUSA is the U.S. State Department's network of over 400 advising centers in 170 countries around the world. These centers are designed to assist international students as they prepare to apply to and attend colleges and universities in the United States. Students at the Institute attend small, seminar-style classes, where the student/faculty ratio is 11:1.They learn from a distinguished faculty of scholar-practitioners with significant, high-level experience in policymaking. Many classes also feature guest lecturers, many of whom are current and former senior government officials who impart their practical knowledge. Discussion and lectures are enriched by insightful anecdotes and lessons learned by participants in recent historical events. Because of its location in Washington, D.C., students are offered direct access to the heart of the U.S. foreign policy community and interaction with many of its leaders. Speakers at the Institute, whether faculty, guest lecturers, or speakers at extracurricular functions to which students are invited, are drawn from the highest ranks of the U.S. government, as well as from embassies, other governments, and domestic and international organizations specializing in national security affairs. The Institute's unique courses offer specialized professional education not available elsewhere. All courses enhance students' capacity to understand and address major current issues. Students frequently learn from their classmates, some of whom are officials in agencies of the U.S. and foreign governments. They often receive career advice from, and establish valuable contacts with, fellow students, their professors, and the guest faculty. In Washington, D.C. many professionals begin their careers as interns.
