Job Description Summary

The MUSC Office of Research Development seeks a forward-thinking, collaborative individual to serve as the Research Development Officer. The target rank is Instructor with a full-time faculty appointment in Academic Affairs Faculty.

Reporting to the Director of the Office of Research Development, the Research Development Officer will serve as a strategic partner to MUSC investigators and research teams in the development of competitive extramural funding proposals, with particular emphasis on complex, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator, research infrastructure, and research training initiatives. The position will work collaboratively across MUSC colleges, departments, centers, institutes, and administrative units to strengthen institutional research capacity and competitiveness.

This is a hybrid position with the expectation that the Research Development Officer will attend in-person meetings, workshops, and events on the MUSC campus.

Job Description

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of the Research Development Officer will be to support and enhance MUSC’s development and submission of complex, multidisciplinary proposals, including center grants, research infrastructure and instrumentation grants, institutional training and career development programs, and other strategic funding initiatives. They will also educate and advise the MUSC research community on best practices related to proposal development, grant writing and application preparation. Specific details of these duties include:

  • Work with ORD team members to provide support for Principal Investigators and multidisciplinary research teams on center grants, training/career development grants, construction grants, shared instrumentation grants, and other large-scale or institutionally strategic funding opportunities to develop and enhance the competitiveness of their research proposals, representing MUSC’s expertise as a performance site for federal grants and contracts.
  • Offer lectures and develop materials for professional development workshops, webinars, and informational sessions to inform the MUSC research community of up-to-date and relevant changes to federal guidelines; educate faculty, academic staff, post-doctoral fellows, and students on successful grant writing strategies.
  • Develop and publish web resources and communications for federal grants, foundation, and other grant opportunities; Maintain the Scientific Environment website which describes MUSC’s institutional environment, physical space, and research, clinical, and academic infrastructure.
  • Provide strategic feedback on proposals including all components of grant applications, e.g. Specific Aims, Research Strategies, ancillary documents.
  • Working with the Associate Director of the Office Research Development, provide consultations and tailored advice on funding strategy development to MUSC investigators; develop and manage processes for matching faculty and program research areas with identified announcements and RFAs; provide support for the weekly Funding Focus newsletter.
  • Perform other research development activities that support the strategic priorities of the Office of Research Development and MUSC research enterprise.

Preferred Qualifications
A doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in the biomedical, health, behavioral, or related sciences is required; 3+ years of experience in research development, scientific writing, proposal development, or related field preferred.

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate complex scientific concepts for technical reviewers and diverse audiences, with experience writing and editing engaging scientific, medical and foundation content for both scientific and lay readers.
  • Experience within a scientific research environment and a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal role research and grant funding play in a major university setting.
  • Strong program planning and project management skills are prerequisites, as well as exceptional organizational capabilities for handling multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to deliver accurate and timely results, meet established deadlines, and effectively manage short and competing timelines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and effective interpersonal abilities, facilitating collaboration within cross-functional teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Advanced understanding of medical (healthcare) and scientific terminology.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis, interpretation, and the ability to draw logical conclusions, projections, and conduct program evaluations is required.
