The Amazon Travel & Events (AT&E) Tech team, part of Finance Automation, is driving a multi-year transformation of the end-to-end Travel & Expense experience for over 500,000 Amazon employees across 64 countries. We are consolidating previously fragmented travel, events, payments, and expense systems into a unified, AI-powered experience within AtoZ, organized around four interconnected modules: Plan, Book, Pay, and Expense. Our platform leverages machine learning, natural language processing, and GenAI to deliver context-aware policy guidance, proactive compliance recommendations, fraud detection, and sustainability intelligence embedded into employee workflows. The transformation eliminates significant administrative burden across the organization while delivering substantial cost savings and recovering employee productivity at scale.

We are seeking a passionate Software Development Engineer who can help us build the next generation of unified Travel & Expense systems and support the AT&E organization.

As a Software Development Engineer on the team, you will design and build services that power AI-driven policy guidance, intelligent booking experiences, automated expense workflows, centralized payment mechanisms, and real-time T&E analytics serving a global customer base. You will collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and senior and peer-level software engineers across Finance Automation and partner organizations including Accounts Payable and Global Corporate Procurement. This role provides you with autonomy and ownership over decisions, working backwards directly from customers. There is ample opportunity for growth due to the high-visibility work and presence of senior engineering talent for guidance and mentorship. The team operates in cross-functional two-pizza team structures that lead T&E technical transformations.

You will contribute to a three-tier AI architecture that answers employee policy questions in under 2 seconds with source references, and proactively surfaces policy-compliant recommendations during booking to prevent violations before they occur. You will build modern, mobile-first travel booking and Meetings & Events hub experiences across 45+ countries with real-time validation and calendar integration. You will develop guided workflows, automated data integration pipelines, and conversational agents that significantly reduce expense report submission time and eliminate a meaningful share of expense reports entirely. You will build virtual payment capabilities and central card automation that reduce out-of-pocket employee spend and target zero manual reconciliation. You will develop AI/ML-powered fraud detection models that automate the majority of investigation checks and support transaction-based detection across expanding payment avenues. You will build a single-source T&E analytics platform providing real-time spend insights, policy violation tracking, and cost optimization visibility for managers and finance partners.


Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable service architectures that power AI-driven policy guidance, intelligent booking, and automated expense workflows for a global user base.
- Deliver working features across the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and operations.
- Collaborate with product managers, applied scientists, and engineers across Finance Automation and partner organizations to translate business needs into reliable technical solutions.
- Coach teammates through code reviews and design discussions, raising the quality bar for the team's software and establishing shared engineering best practices.
- Identify and resolve root causes of operational issues while continuously improving system reliability and maintainability.

Basic Qualifications:

- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers

Preferred Qualifications:

- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
