Do you want to shape how automation products are conceived, built, and experienced by thousands of associates across Amazon's operations network? As an Industrial Designer III, you will lead the design of next-generation automation and material-handling products for Amazon's Middle Mile and Sub-Same Day operations. Your work will span the full product development lifecycle — from identifying operational opportunities and sketching early concepts through prototyping, testing, design validation, and production deployment.

Amazon is accelerating its investment in automation, with a growing portfolio of robotic, material-handling, and low-cost automation products moving from early concepts into pilots and scaled rollouts. This role gives you the chance to establish industrial design principles and standards, influence products before designs are locked, and ensure that associate experience, ergonomics, usability, and manufacturability are considered from day one alongside engineering performance.

Key job responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end industrial design of automation and material-handling products — from concept sketches and digital prototypes through design validation and production-ready specifications — partnering with hardware, systems, controls, and manufacturing teams.
- Define and validate design requirements by clarifying assumptions, understanding system dependencies, and making trade-offs between scalability, manufacturability, cost, and associate experience.
- Apply human factors and ergonomic principles to products such as robotic workcells, material-handling equipment, carts, containers, and workstations, reducing safety risks and simplifying associate workflows.
- Contribute to product vision and roadmap planning by identifying where to focus design efforts for the greatest operational impact, and by aligning design strategy with program goals and deployment timelines.
- Mentor other designers, establish and drive adoption of design best practices, and use generative AI tools where appropriate to accelerate ideation and refine design outputs.

A day in the life
You might start your morning reviewing prototype feedback from hardware engineering, then present concept directions to leadership in a design review. After lunch you could be refining a workcell component in CAD to meet ergonomic targets, followed by a working session with operations and safety partners to validate how associates will interact with a new piece of equipment. You will also spend time in operational sites observing real workflows, rapidly prototyping solutions, and seeing your designs perform in the field.

About the team
Our team of approximately 20 engineers and technical program leaders owns end-to-end automation product development for Amazon's Middle Mile and Sub-Same Day networks. We bring together hardware engineering, industrial design, systems and integration engineering, software and controls, data and simulation, supply chain, and technical program management to solve problems at the complete product and system level.

We work closely with Operations, Workplace Health and Safety, Robotics, Operations Technology, and external manufacturing partners. Team members split their time between product development and working directly in operational sites, giving you the chance to observe real challenges, prototype solutions on the ground, and see your designs deployed at scale.

Basic Qualifications:

- 5+ years of design & innovation, research & development work experience
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a foreign equivalent
- Experience with design & innovation and research & development
- Experience in management of engineering design projects
- Experience using business or technical software like MS Excel, MS Project, and CAD software

Preferred Qualifications:

- 5+ years of specialty (with progressive responsibility) experience
- Master's degree in Engineering (any domain), Operations, Business Administration, or a related field
- Knowledge of concepts like system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, system analysis, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, electronic system design, and decision making
- Experience with complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems and high-speed manufacturing
- Experience with design-in-safety

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
