About the Role
Do you want to commence your Intensive Care nursing career in a supportive, collaborative environment where you will receive diverse exposure to a range of clinical conditions and management of complex patients?  St. Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne ICU are seeking enthusiastic, passionate & dedicated Registered Nurses wishing to join our team. Opportunities exist for the 2026 intake of the Postgraduate Intensive Care Nursing stream.

You will be supported to learn in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment, where you will receive diverse exposure to a range of complex patient presentations & clinical conditions.

About the Program

  • SVHM ICU is in partnership with Deakin University (Burwood).

  • Deakin Semester 1 commences on Monday 8th February 2027

  • To participate in this program applicants must be successful in gaining employment at SVHM ICU to complete the clinical requirements.

  • The SVHM ICU contract will be 0.8 EFT for a fixed-term 12 month period. Requests for higher FTE is negotiable. Rotating roster pattern, including 8 hour AM and PM shifts, and 10 hour night duty shifts

  • Successful candidates are then required to enrol into the Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Nursing with Deakin University (Burwood) to complete the academic requirements.

  • To fulfil the employment contract with SVHM ICU, students must be enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Nursing with Deakin University (Burwood) for the full 1 year period.

  • Progression to Semester 2 and continuation of employment within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is conditional upon the successful completion of all required academic and clinical components of Semester 1.

  • Post successful completion of the Postgraduate year, potential ongoing employment opportunities within the ICU will be discussed.


Classifications for this position will range from YP4-YP9 ($86,684 - $104,379 per annum).

Selection criteria

  • Applicants must hold current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse without conditions.

  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of 2 years nursing practice working in an acute care setting in a tertiary hospital (inclusive of graduate nurse year).

  • Applicants must meet the AHPRA standard on English language skills and have basic computer skills.

  • Applicants must be willing to undergo a National Police Record Check prior to commencement of the program.

  • Applicants must have professional indemnity insurance.

  • Completion of SVHM PSP and/or TSP is favourable

  • Completion of SVHM’s Online 12 Lead ECG Course and/or Heart Starter Study Day, plus up-to-date ALS certification required for those who have not completed SVHM’s PSP and/or TSP

About SVHM - Intensive Care Unit

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) is a 19 bed environment (funded to 15 ICU equivalent beds) caring for patients requiring critical care. It accommodates elective and emergency surgical and medical patients.

The ICU admits deteriorating patients from the ward environment, Operating Theatre, Emergency Department plus external admissions from other metropolitan and rural hospitals via Adult Retrieval Victoria (ARV).

Postgraduate nursing students’ clinical requirements for the Graduate Certificate of Intensive Care Nursing (Deakin) are completed at SVHM ICU. Students are supported in providing one-to-one care to patients with a range of different requirements including: advanced haemodynamic monitoring, management of vasoactive and inotropic drugs, temporary pacing, external ventricular drains / Codman’s, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), invasive mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation (NIV), and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies (CRRT).
