We talk about the 'U.S. boy.' We have hundreds of 'U.S. boys' here – each of which is unique. There are places here for all these different kinds of boys. Some so many boys are so dimensional in their interests, so diverse in their strengths. The U.S. is different from other boys' schools.

University School teaches boys of all ages the essential tenets of becoming young men: responsibility, loyalty, and consideration. At University School, our students are set up for success both in and beyond the classroom. University School inspires boys of promise to become young men of character who lead and serve. Our dedicated faculty, rigorous curriculum, and experiential programs foster intellectual, physical, creative, and moral excellence. University School is a diverse and inclusive community where each boy is known and loved.

Responsibility, Loyalty, Consideration are more than words in a motto; the concepts are woven into school life.

  • U.S. teachers and students model integrity and respect.
  • U.S. boys rise to the occasion to lead and to serve those in need.
  • U.S. boys develop empathy by consistently listening, sharing, and being there for others.

University School believes that its students learn their most formative and enduring lessons through exposure to and experience with a broad range of perspectives. We recruit and support faculty whose backgrounds and training bring local, national, and international perspectives to our school. We admit and support students who represent economically, culturally, and racially diverse communities within Northeast Ohio. All students have many opportunities to explore their talents and develop their skills in new contexts. During his time in the U.S., each student is encouraged to discover both his responsibility to others and his purpose in the world.

University School has a diverse population from Greater Cleveland 848 male students are enrolled selectively. The lower and middle schools (grades Junior K-8) have 420 students, and the upper school (grades 9-12) has 428 students. This averages out to class sizes of 14 students, which is a 7:1 student to teacher ratio. We take pride in our accomplished teachers. University School faculty number 140, 118 of whom have master's degrees, 12 have doctorate degrees, three have J.D.s, and one has an M.D.

One hundred percent of University School graduates go on to four-year colleges. Our approach to college counseling is individual. As each boy is his person, colleges have their own unique "character," and we foster an excellent student-college match.

Boys of all dispositions – intellectuals, athletes, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs – are free to be themselves at U.S. Students thrive in an environment with the freedom to explore, create, move, practice, compete, and play. They learn to own their successes, bounce back from mistakes, accept responsibility for themselves, and step up to participate in decisions for the greater good. The U.S. develops well-rounded, considerate, and responsible young men free to forge their path to success.

With over a century of experience helping young boys unlock their academic potential, University School is proud to have a hand in shaping our students into accomplished young men. Our academic program begins in kindergarten and continues through 12th grade.
