UWC-USA is one of 17 United World College (UWC) campuses located on five continents. A two-year residential school, UWC-USA, serves students age 16-19 who typically represent more than 75 different countries. They participate in a unique program that combines academic challenge with an experiential, hands-on approach to learning. UWC-USA distinguishes itself through its robust Wilderness Program, the Bartos Institute for Constructive Engagement of Conflict, and its deep relationship with the local community of Las Vegas, N.M., where students participate in an array of service projects.
Engaged, talented students who are committed to making the world better. Expert colleagues know their subjects and are passionate about the UWC mission of using education as a force for peace. A warm, welcoming campus community that embraces its members. A home in one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine.
At UWC-USA, we meld the IB Diploma Program with global studies and experiential education to imbue students with proper international understanding. Learning takes place in expected ways and places—lectures and labs, for example—as well as unexpected settings. A student might work in a soup kitchen with a peer from Cambodia who reveals a new perspective about world history. Or share a tent on a wilderness trip with someone from Ghana that elicits an explanation of her religion, culture, or political system. Wherever the learning happens, experienced faculty guide and mentor students through the challenges and discoveries they make during their two years of study.
Daily life at UWC can be joyful, stressful, stimulating, and busy—often all at the same time. Whether it is your first time away from home or you have years of boarding school experience under your belt, you will find living at UWC-USA is unique. Affiliations are formed in every way imaginable—in addition to having roommates and country mates, you will have wall mates (classmates who live in the room next door), region mates, and dorm mates. There are hundreds of ways to form a family! Throughout your journey, days will be filled with engaging classes, eye-opening community engagement projects, adventurous wilderness expeditions, and rich dorm room dialogues centered on politics, identity, cultural perspectives, and much more.
