Professional Children's School is an independent day school enrolling almost 200 students in grades 6-12. Founded in 1914, Professional Children's School provides a challenging and engaging college preparatory program for busy artists, athletes, and other young people who are serious about their studies. Our schedule was flexible, allowing students to balance time in school with professional demands outside. Our community of master educators and devoted peers provides the social and emotional support children need to excel.
Since our founding in 1914, PCS has provided an academic education specially designed for talented young people pursuing goals in the performing arts, entertainment, competitive sports, and various other areas of interest, recently including technology and entrepreneurial endeavors. PCS provides all of the necessary academic tools to ensure success in leading colleges, universities, and conservatories and throughout life while enabling students to pursue their individual goals outside of school. Our academic program ensures that our students can focus on both school and their outside interests by incorporating flexible academic schedules, Guided Study while away from school, and an understanding environment of accommodation and planning.
PCS is committed to integrating technology throughout the curriculum to prepare students to live and learn in our increasingly technology-based world. This offers an enhanced classroom centered experience while ensuring our students' ability to pursue professional and pre-professional endeavors that may remove them from the physical classroom.
The Mission of Professional Children's School is to provide a challenging academic education for young people working in or studying for careers in the performing and visual arts, competitive sports, and other endeavors to meet the diverse needs of our students, provide mastery of fundamental skills and prepare them for college or other post-secondary education to teach young people to balance the demands of their professional, personal and academic lives to provide support for young people who must often contend with the pressures of the adult world in addition to the everyday pressures of adolescence to encourage young people to respect others of diverse ethnic, racial, economic, geographic and artistic backgrounds to balance their individual needs with the needs of others and to accept responsibility for their decisions to foster a community in which both academic and artistic pursuits are valued.
PCS is committed to developing a community where all of its members feel safe, supported, and celebrated, and share a shared responsibility to cultivate the same in others. We aim to be a place that embraces diversity in its multiple forms, actively confronts prejudice and bias, and does not shy away from difficult conversations. Given that the journey towards equity and justice is ongoing and evolving, our academic offerings and social interactions remain open to revision. We strive to become responsible world citizens.
Suppose you know a busy ballerina, an aspiring actor, an Olympic hopeful, a masterful musician, or a competitive chess champion. In that case, Professional Children's School could be a great school option for them! At Professional Children's School, students don't need to choose between their education and their dreams. Our individualized school schedule provides the flexibility our students need to balance their pre-professional and professional endeavors with their academic goals leaving time for schoolwork and auditions, rehearsals, performances, competitions, classes, and training. This makes Professional Children's School ideal for dancers, musicians, actors, models, athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs who are also serious about their studies.
Professional Children's School provides a well-rounded college preparatory education to students in grades 6-12. Working with young people who are pursuing careers or rigorous pre-professional training while attending a college preparatory school requires flexibility on the part of the faculty. With approximately 200 students and 26 faculty members, students and teachers forge close relationships to support students in reaching their academic goals. While the school's mission remains the same, the academic program at PCS has grown ever more rigorous since its founding in 1914. Today, the overwhelming majority of PCS graduates attend college or conservatory immediately upon graduation. The remainder chooses to continue their pre-professional training or professional careers.
Especially in the upper school years, professional training and other students' commitments may make demands on students' time and interests. Yet, PCS diploma requirements provide for a broad background in fundamental academic disciplines. Since the school's earliest days, some PCS students have needed to keep up with their studies while away from school for professional reasons through a program called Guided Study. Today, technology makes that process more manageable. PCS is committed to being a school whose program enables students to learn through the online exchange of ideas, content, and instruction. This commitment allows PCS to serve better its mission of educating professional and pre-professional students while preparing them to live and learn in our increasingly connected world.
