The Phelps boarding school brings boys together from around the state, the country, and the world for a unique educational experience that opens their minds accepts their differences builds their confidence, and prepares them to be better men.
Since 1946, The Phelps School has been dedicated to the individual boy. We are a diverse, close-knit community — over 100 students, boarding and day, sixth grade to seniors and postgraduates, and their dedicated faculty mentors. We share a vital goal: to help students become better learners. We help boys become better men.
Our mission is to bring out the best in each boy. Our promise to parents is that we will equip their sons with skills to compete in the future and the strength of character to create their futures. Our sights are set beyond test-taking and college applications. Our challenge is to cultivate every young man's critical and creative thinking, his sense of compassion and collaboration, his readiness to serve and lead. We prepare students for college. More importantly, we prepare young men for life.
Students come to Phelps from around the world. Their gifts and talents, like their personalities and backgrounds, are diverse and enriching. At Phelps, we value that individuality above all else. Each student faces his challenges and sets his own goals. Bright boys who learn differently discover their true capabilities. Courses of study are personally tailored. Learning support is consistent and effective. The sense of brotherhood — in dorm life, the dining hall, weekend activities, and sports — is pervasive, genuine, and life-changing.
The Phelps Student Government Association helps boys learn about servant-leadership. Elected class officers participate in self-government, plan and coordinate activities and special events, build closer relationships and school spirit, and continuously strive to recognize and encourage the best in each Phelps student. The Studio Art program allows boys to express themselves through various artistic mediums, including clay, collage, painting, and more.
Film Appreciation exposes boys to movies beyond popular, modern films. This group views films then discusses their reactions and the meanings behind the works. Theme weeks pull together movies from similar genres. "Student choice week" gives boys a chance to screen titles they enjoy.
Tucked away on the outskirts of the fields and forest surrounding Phelps, the greenhouse boasts four irrigated planting rows and adjoins an open-air garden. Here boys garden in the fall, harvesting the summer crop tended by resident faculty and administration during the summer. Boys re-plant a seasonal crop, and when the activity returns in the spring, they prepare for the growing season. The trimester ends just as plants burst into bloom.
Fresh produce from the greenhouse and garden goes directly into the school's dining hall and onto the students' plates in various dishes prepared by the Culinart chefs. Students also donate yield from the garden to local charities and food banks. "We had a riot of peppers this year," notes Ms. Rupp, who works in school administration but also supervises the gardening activity. "And you should have seen the kale!"
