The Darrow School is dedicated to serving students with diverse backgrounds and abilities, building on each student's talents and interests to inspire enduring confidence for college and life success. This mission is accomplished through our active curriculum, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, individually focused, and combines innovative classroom instruction with project-based learning and environmental consciousness.
Darrow is the only school in the United States located on the site of a historic Shaker village. The Mount Lebanon Shaker Society was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. It is a setting of unparalleled beauty and historical significance that helps define our school's character while touching the lives of everyone who lives and learns here. The Shakers' inspired sense of architecture is reflected in the craftsmanship, aesthetics, and subtle design of the buildings we learn, live, and play.
Darrow opened in 1932 as the Lebanon School for Boys. Founded by a group of educational and community leaders who shared a set of values about education and community responsibility, it was renamed Darrow School in 1939 in honor of the local family who had first settled the land and provided support and leadership in the community's early years. Darrow became coeducational in the early 1970s.
Academic Mentorship is precisely what it sounds like: a program of one-on-one educational training sessions that enable students to produce superior academic work. It may also include independent study.
In the same sense that personal athletic training catalyzes better sports performance, Academic Mentorship brings out the highest levels of effort and achievement in scholastic pursuits. It is advanced learning through hard work, firm support, and ongoing discussion, and assessment of progress. Academic Mentors are teachers who identify each student's learning preferences, environmental preferences, language barriers, personal learning history, long-term goals, and determine how to establish a road map for achievement.
Learning at The Darrow School is hands-on, minds-on, hearts open. As happens in many schools, our students do tangle with complex equations, author insightful essays, and measure themselves through tests. They engage in spirited debates across traditional subject areas like English, the Arts, History, Math and Science, and World Languages. But – and this is significant, But – Darrow students are doing far more than merely reading for next week's test or prepping for the SAT's.
Colleges and employers (not to mention the planet itself) prioritize people who can align diverse personalities and manage vast amounts of disparate information to solve truly relevant and truly complicated problems. Those problem-solvers are made here. In addition to traditional education elements, we teach these skills from the first day of school. Students get dirty through hands-on experiments, discover secret talents in arts and athletics, practice sustainability, and invest themselves in service projects across our campus.
