The Albany Academies

In 2007, two historic Albany schools, The Albany Academy and Albany Academy for Girls, merged to form The Albany Academies. The two schools, each 200 years old, have retained their separate identities and traditions. Students continue to receive a diploma from either AAG or AA. However, the two schools have created an extraordinarily useful educational model: ten grades of single-gender education, followed by two final years of coeducational classes and co-curricular activities.

As members of the Academy community, we acknowledge that our actions and attitudes affect the well-being of others and the school as a whole. We believe that our community must be built on trust and mutual respect, which will encourage each member to reach their unique potential.

To this end, we will strive to foster the ideals of honesty, tolerance, and integrity both in ourselves and in others. We recognize that we must have the courage to support and affirm one another and to conduct ourselves with civility in all aspects of our lives. Through self-discipline, commitment, and mutual support, these goals of personal growth and pride in our school community will be achieved.

The Albany Academies—The Albany Academy and Albany Academy for Girls—develop capable and confident students through single-gender education in the Lower and Middle School and coordinate education in the Upper School. Employing individualized and positive education, The Albany Academies provide students with the knowledge, skills, and character needed for leadership and success in the creative, entrepreneurial century that lies ahead.

Albany Academy for Girls and The Albany Academy have prepared students for college and leadership for over 200 years. At that time, the definition of "preparatory" has changed quite a bit—one sure thing is that it will continue to change. Today, we are educating in new ways for the creative, entrepreneurial century that lies ahead.

Why attend an independent school? The reasons cited repeatedly by the 4,000 families who send their children to independent schools in the Capital Region include individual attention, small class sizes, teacher excellence, and high academic standards. The main motive for families looking into independent education can be summarized in one word: quality. We encourage our students to grow toward their level of excellence through a combination of academic, athletic, artistic, and social activities. Our students flourish as a result of this combination, and I am sure your child will as well.

The Albany Academies offer many opportunities for children entering our Preschool program through Grade 12. We strongly believe in single-gender education through Grade 8, when it is most critical. Coeducational opportunities for students begin in the upper grades in preparation for college and life. As a student goes through the Upper School, more coeducational classes are available. Our strong college preparatory program includes a wealth of opportunities for our students to gain leadership positions and participate in various performing arts and athletic programs.

The Albany Academies is a tight-knit community with a focus on academic excellence. But there is so much more to an Academies education than what happens in the classroom. We aim to provide our students with the necessary skills to be successful leaders in tomorrow's world.

The Academies' 50 acres include four playing fields, two gymnasiums, a swimming pool, squash courts, and an ice rink in addition to three performance spaces, four art studios, and three music rooms. There are over 30 clubs and organizations, sports and activities, and many opportunities to do vital and fulfilling community service projects.
