Founded in 1929 with an unprecedented financial aid approach, St. Andrew's is an independent, co-ed, all-boarding, Episcopal high school. In the 21st century, we rarely think very much about the real purpose of secondary and undergraduate education. We are too busy figuring out how to gain admission and seize a competitive advantage to think clearly about the miracle and the opportunity of joining an educational community dedicated to human and academic excellence.

St. Andrew's thinks about the purpose and privilege of education every day. In our 86 years as a distinctive educational experiment, we have sought to tie education to human transformation, illumination, service to causes larger than ourselves, and a commitment to peace, justice, and equality in our country and the world. That is why St. Andrew's is a dynamic and electric place. At a time when many private schools peer suspiciously and timidly out at their nation and the world, St. Andrew's embraces the challenge, excitement, and opportunity of a new century of enlightenment, progress, and hope. Schools do not have to retreat and ignore founding and mission principles to survive. They must, in contrast, celebrate the full power of liberal education and learning.

The academic spirit of the school ties excellence to the original work of the liberal arts. We teach the most rigorous and transformational skills and habits of mind essential to citizenship, leadership, and service in the 21st century: the power of writing, the art of argument, the engagement of research, problem-solving and experimentation, the cultivation of collaboration, teamwork, creativity, and discovery. The program relies on an ambitious and dedicated faculty and a passionate, curious, and energetic student body. Whether students arrive from private, public, charter, or international schools, they meet an academic program that completely redefines their understanding of teaching and learning excellence.

We are proudly counter-cultural, saying yes to kindness and no to acts of words and expressions of disrespect and cruelty, saying yes to technology as a tool for learning and no as a source of narcissism and distraction, saying yes to hard work, resilience, and grit and no to the alcohol and drug industry saying yes to living lives of service and no to living lives of selfishness and elitism.

We continue to cultivate a deep and lasting desire for learning in our students, a willingness to ask questions. We pursue skeptical, independent inquiry and an appreciation of the liberal arts as a source of wisdom, perspective, and hope. We encourage our students to do the work of scholars, artists, and scientists and develop those expressive and analytical skills necessary for effective communication, judicious consideration of multiple points of view, and meaningful lives as engaged citizens. We seek to help our students develop a passion for intellectual pursuits such that each student feels inspired to develop and pursue his/her talents.

Our students and faculty live in a residential community founded on ethical principles and Christian beliefs. We expect our faculty and staff to make our students' interests primary, to maintain professional roles with students and to act as role models at all times, to set and maintain healthy boundaries with students, to encourage student autonomy and independence, to act transparently with students, and to support each student's developmental growth and social integration at the School. Our students collaborate with dynamic adults and pursue their passions in a co-curriculum that includes athletics, community service, and the arts. We encourage our students to find the balance between living in and contributing to the community and developing themselves as leaders and individuals.
