Head-Royce is a nationally recognized K-12 independent school situated in the hills of Oakland, California. Our mission is to inspire a lifelong love of learning with a focus on scholarship, diversity, and citizenship.

The remarkable and innovative thinking launched by Anna Head over 125 years ago remains a source of pride and is the core of Head-Royce School today. We transformed into an independent, co-educational, K-12 school in the 1970s, and that spirit of inquiry and innovation remains infused in our culture. If you visit our campus, you will see this a dynamic and vibrant learning center in action. From innovation centers, internships, and integrated technology to life skills classes, service learning, cross-divisional buddies, and small advising groups, we are equally dedicated to educational excellence and social-emotional learning.

At our heart, we are a community of passionate educators and learners, all sharing a deep commitment to creating lifelong learners who will be prepared to lead with joy and compassion. Our faculty is world-class, bringing unique perspectives from a wide range of experiences. Their diversity of thought, coupled with their subject matter mastery, uniquely positions them to provide transformative experiences to every student across our K-12 setting. Our families come to us from various backgrounds and cultures, and we are proud to reflect the fabric of the Bay Area.

We enroll a diverse student body of approximately 875 talented and ambitious learners. Our admissions are open to all students regardless of race, color, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, or ethnic origin. Our mission is to inspire our students a lifelong love of learning and pursuit of academic excellence, promote understanding of and respect for the diversity that makes our society strong, and encourage constructive and responsible global citizenship.

Founded in 1887, Head-Royce is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational, college-preparatory, K-12 School, which offers a challenging educational program to educate the child. The School nurtures the development of each student through a program that seeks:

• To develop intellectual abilities such as scholarship and disciplined, critical thinking
• To foster in each student integrity, ethical behavior, compassion, and a sense of humor
• To promote responsibility and leadership, an appreciation of individual and cultural differences, and a respect for the opinions of others
• To nurture aesthetic abilities such as creativity, imagination, musical, and visual talent and
• To encourage joyful, healthy living, a love of nature, and physical fitness.
