Since 1883, Houghton Academy has been educating young people from across America, and we have worked with international students for over sixty years. Welcome to the website of Houghton Academy, where our emphasis is to develop in young men and women their own unique heart and mind for God, providing the requisite nurture and care of a Christian boarding and day school.

Houghton Academy has since 1883 helped students to

• Understand the need for a personal commitment to Christ
• Comprehend the importance of a life of service
• Grow toward a mature understanding of society, history, and the natural world
• Develop in physical ability and strength and
• Exhibit appropriate social courtesies

A wise man once said, "Success is a peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you were capable of becoming." Peaceful success is my ultimate hope for Houghton Academy students, a learning community where doing one's best is the expectation for all.

It is exciting when God works in a student's life, not only in partnership with local families and churches but also in serving families globally. The world becomes an extension of our body life. Faculty and students alike often experience unexpected growth from the cross-cultural impact of our 70 international students. Academy students come from down the street, across town, from the next county, from states too-distant to drive to, and from countries worldwide. Academy students choose to come to Houghton because we offer a lively school community of motivated students making healthy lifestyle choices.

The purpose of Houghton Academy is to provide Christ-centered education in a Christian environment. For this reason, the school must maintain a high standard of Christian living. Students have minor differences of opinion about accepted conduct from varied backgrounds, but the life standard upheld by Houghton Academy is widely endorsed. Christ is the center of Houghton's purpose and program, and the rules exist to preserve a strong Christian emphasis in the educational process.

Our standards can be divided into three categories:

• First, some standards and expectations echo the Ten Commandments' timeless demands and Christ's ethical teachings.
• The second group of rules originates in a particular time and cultural context and reflects the practical application of biblical principles made by our founders and staff. They are not moral absolutes for all people in all times and places, but they represent our firm convictions at this time and place.
• Third, the most significant number of rules exist primarily to create an orderly system in which large numbers of people can live and work together conveniently. In this category are rules about attendance at meals, dorm curfews, and study hours.
