As a teaching-focused university, UNI's faculty put students first. Students also discover UNI's value. More than 94 percent of first-year students receive some financial assistance. Breaking away from national trends, UNI graduates' average student loan indebtedness has decreased by nearly 13 percent over the past seven years. They owe less than students who graduate from most other institutions in Iowa. It's no surprise that UNI ranks in the top third of all U.S. institutions in Money Magazine's "2017 Best Colleges for Your Money" list.

If you have taken classes at another college or university and want to transfer those credits to UNI, you are in good company. Each year more than 35 percent of our students have transferred to UNI from two- and four-year schools. Some of them have an associate's degree, while some have just a few classes under their belt. Either way, our academic advisers make your transfer process easy to understand and easy to complete.

The University of Northern Iowa has a long and rich history of service dating back to the mid-1800s. In 1866, an orphanage for children affected by the Civil War was established in Cedar Falls. In a few years, it became apparent that the building's usefulness would shortly be coming to an end as orphans grew up and moved out into the world. Iowans saw an opportunity and seized it the Iowa State Normal School – an institution created for and devoted to teachers' training – was founded in 1876. Since its inception, the institution has also gone by the names of the Iowa State Normal School, Iowa State Teachers College, State College of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa. True to its roots, UNI emphasizes hands-on service learning and retains the proud distinction of leading Iowa's number-one teacher education program. Today's UNI also offers more than 90 majors to choose from, allowing students to explore various interests and prepare for success after college. Outside of the classroom, UNI's vibrant campus is home to 300+ student clubs and organizations, 17 Division I collegiate sports teams, a multitude of fine arts options, and more.
