The University of Providence was founded through the Sisters of Providence's collaborative efforts, the Ursuline Sisters, the Catholic Bishop of Great Falls, and the civic community. All of them recognized the societal need for higher education. Its educational mission, sponsored by the Sisters of Providence, continues to be dedicated people's shared endeavor.

Financial aid programs at the University of Providence are designed to help students pay for expenses associated with earning a college degree, including tuition, fees, books, transportation, supplies, and the student's living expenses while enrolled. Assistance may be provided through a combination of scholarship grants, work opportunities, and loans. The financial aid year begins with the fall semester, followed by spring and summer semesters.

The year was 1932. The United States was in its worst economic condition in history—the Great Depression. Yet, in Montana, a small university had come to life thanks to a shared vision and dedication from a bishop and several sisters. Great Falls' Catholic Bishop, Reverend Edwin V. O'Hara, and the Sisters of Charity of Providence and the Ursuline Sisters worked together to create Great Falls Junior College.
