Founded in 1910, The University of Southern Mississippi opened its doors as a small teachers' college. Today, the University has grown into a comprehensive doctoral and research-driven institution with a proud history and an eye on the future.
With a diverse student body of approximately 14,500 students representing 72 countries, all 50 states, and every county in Mississippi, we celebrate diversity in every sense of the word. Southern Miss is a haven for the arts, but the University maintains a tradition of success in academics and athletics. A dual-campus university, Southern Miss serves students on campuses in Hattiesburg and Long Beach and five teaching and research sites in Mississippi and Online at Southern Miss.
A major is an academic program that determines the classes you take and the degree you earn when you graduate. Many of our majors offer more than one degree, which allows you to specialize. We have more than 140-degree programs in total. Degrees span the liberal arts, business, education, psychology, health, nursing, science, and technology. A number of our programs are nationally recognized or are considered the best in Mississippi.
About 3,400 students live in campus residence halls or fraternity/ sorority houses on our residential Hattiesburg campus. Students are in the center of a vibrant campus atmosphere and can walk or bike to class and hundreds of annual events.
Students commute to the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, but the drive is a beach trip, with the white sands and blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico across from campus.
With 12 campus dining locations - 11 in Hattiesburg - and a variety of meal plans to fit your budget; you will never have gaps in your dining coverage. Eat healthy, fast, late - or anywhere in between - as your appetite or schedule dictates.
Student organizations are a great way to find fun and friendship on campus and volunteer and focus on academics and professional development. More than 150 groups are on the Hattiesburg campus, plus fraternities and sororities and 30+ groups on the Gulf Park campus.
Through an extensive selection of top-ranked degree and certificate programs and quality professional development opportunities, our graduates impact the world in diverse fields such as ocean science, psychology, social work, nursing, business, and the arts.

As the Gulf South's premier research institution, The University of Southern Mississippi continues to meet head-on the day's intellectual and human issues. The challenges are formidable, and university professors and students are tackling the issues through relevant research that translates into real-world applications and learning opportunities.
Our students have the opportunity to learn from expert faculty in a variety of fields as they develop their research interests. The University hosts two annual research symposia, one for undergraduates and one for graduate students, where many students present their original research or showcase creative work.
We are a team of professionals dedicated to helping students succeed in their careers. In addition to career counseling, we help students find jobs today that prepare them for their careers. We help students build their résumé, cover letter, practice interviews, and ultimately find their entry-level job.
The Career Services office has an extensive resource center containing information on all things related to your major or chosen career. Books, files, periodicals - we have it all! You can find information on graduate schools, employer profiles, job search skills and techniques, salary/job demand information, and employer directories. You will also find more references on interviews, resumes, and information specific to your major or field. Even if you don't have a major, here you'll find resources showing you different jobs you can get with various majors.
