We are the University of South Alabama. South, for short. Home to more than 15,500 students and more than 100 academic programs, our University is a dynamic community of leaders and learners who support and challenge one another to be actively engaged citizens who advance the Gulf Coast region and the world.
Founded in 1963, South's vision is to foster an environment where couples engage in learning experiences with high-level research, enabling our faculty and students to be leaders in their disciplines. The unique and beautiful Gulf Coast region is a catalyst for discovery and innovation, and South's 1,200-acre campus has been transformed over the past decade with new facilities and resources for housing and recreation, health sciences, the arts, engineering, computer science, and athletics.
Jaguar athletes compete in 17 Division I sports, including baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. The coastal region is healthier because of the USA Health system. Through its five components — USA Children's & Women's Hospital, USA Medical Center, USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, USA Physicians Group, and the College of Medicine — USA Health provides care to hundreds of thousands of people. It is a training ground for future physicians and health care professionals.

The Office of Immigration and International Admissions at the University of South Alabama is responsible for processing applications for admission submitted by non-citizens and immigration compliance for those students and others associated with the University. In the USA, learning takes place in a vibrant, active, and exciting environment. Our faculty are dedicated to teaching and helping students reach their maximum potential. More than three-quarters of instruction at South is delivered by full-time faculty, a very high rate for a research-intensive institution. Our faculty and staff are committed to providing the resources that our students need to be academically successful, including a new Student Advising Center and our Academic Success Center, which offers academic success workshops, first-year experience courses, peer mentoring, and peer tutoring.

The University of South Alabama was founded in 1963 without a single building to call its own. More than 50 years and quite a few buildings later, the USA is a vibrant university that catalyzes transformational change in the city, the state, and the Gulf Coast region.
USA's story began in the early 1960s when Mobile's civic leaders saw the need to improve higher education access in southwest Alabama. Realizing the region had outgrown the small extension program that operated out of a building downtown, they formulated plans for a four-year, degree-granting institution. On May 3, 1963, a bill creating a new, independent university successfully passed the Alabama Legislature, and the USA was born.
Classes began in June 1964 at a new, $1 million building in west Mobile. Initial enrollment totaled 276. The extent of the pent-up demand for education became apparent when the first fall semester began. Enrollment leaped to 928 — and it continues to grow. Today, the USA enrolls more than 16,000 students annually and has awarded more than 80,000 degrees.
