Established in 1957, State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is the region's first and largest public college, serving 11,000 college credit students annually at campuses in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and Venice, and via online classes. Another 14,000 participants annually attend professional development and personal enrichment classes. The College has graduated more than 50,000 students since 1959.
SCF is a dynamic College dedicated to meeting the educational and workforce training needs of citizens and businesses in the region. SCF has expanded its mission to include workforce baccalaureate degrees while focusing on highly respected associate degrees that prepare graduates for university transfer and professional careers.
The Corporate and Community Development Division offers year-round noncredit classes in workforce training, small business development, professional development, personal enrichment, and driving safety through workshops, seminars, online classes, and on-site training programs at area businesses.
Broadening the continuum of education, the College opened a collegiate charter school in fall 2010. The school enables students to complete high school and receive their Associate in Arts degree simultaneously. The College is a member of the Association of Florida Colleges, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the American Association of Community Colleges, and the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities.

Academic advising is a deliberate collaboration between advisors and students creating teaching and learning relationships. These relationships support students' educational endeavors and create an engaged learning environment leading toward their success at SCF and in the greater community.
SCF welcomes international students who have completed high school and wish to study in the United States to apply for admission. Students wishing to study at SCF must have English language proficiency. SCF is a dynamic College dedicated to meeting the educational and workforce training needs of citizens and businesses in the region. Students are encouraged to take advantage of all SCF offers by using the Student Life Staff as a resource for problem-solving and assistance. The staff specializes in several areas, including Student Activities, Student Clubs and Organizations, Student Government, Wellness, and much more.
State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, offers many activities outside of the classroom. For students, SCF understands that learning also takes place outside of the classroom and supports the inter-relatedness of academics and extracurricular activities. There are many opportunities for involvement, including academic teams, clubs, and student government competitive and intramural sports and theatre and music productions.
For the community, SCF is proud to be an integral part of local arts and activities. There is always something happening for the public to enjoy, from theater production to a sporting event, a musical performance to an art gallery exhibit.
On September 17, 1957, the State Board of Education established Manatee Junior College as an approved college with the primary mission of providing college training for young people and adults. On November 5, 1957, Dr. Samuel R. Neel, Jr. became the first president. The College began its first classes on September 2, 1958, in a former senior high school with 502 students. In 1959 the first classes were held on the current southwest Manatee County campus with a full-fledged sophomore class, and a large freshman class enrolled in university-parallel courses.
In 1973 classes were offered at Venice High School to provide higher education opportunities for south Sarasota County residents. The College's Venice Center, supported by North Port, Englewood, and Venice's contributions, was established in 1977. In 1983 the College received an appropriation from the Florida Legislature to build the current full-service campus in Venice, dedicated on March 30, 1985. The College's name was changed to Manatee Community College in 1985.
State College of Florida Collegiate School (SCFCS) opened in fall 2010. The school includes sixth through twelfth grades. The first class will graduate in the spring of 2014. SCF's tuition-free public charter school provides students with the opportunity to graduate simultaneously with a high school diploma and an associate college degree.
Dr. Carol Probstfeld became the College's sixth president on January 22, 2013, after serving as the College's interim president and vice president of business and administrative services.
Credit enrollment is 27,000 students annually, and about 44,000 have graduated from the College. SCF consistently provides high-quality instruction, as demonstrated by SCF graduates' proven success in careers and performance at the university level. As the College looks forward, SCF remains committed to being flexible and responsible to our community's needs.
