Vitebsk State Medical Institute was established as a hospital-medical by Resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the BSSR.
On February 20, 2000, based on copying equipment unit, the university Editorial and Publishing (EPC) Center of VSMU was created. Currently, the employees of the Center are I.A.Borisov, N.B. Ginko, S.A. Kushnerova, S.E. Aglobleva, L.P. Bagretsova, L.A. Petrova, O.A. Sushko, I.M. Minochkina, V.A. Belousov. The Center has a license for printing activities. Such technical equipment as risographs, copiers, sheet collators, stitching machines, thermal binders, shredders, and computers enable the University to provide the University with educational and scientific literature and blanks.
The university staff has prepared, and EPC issued lecture courses and manuals on almost all medicine and pharmacy disciplines, including lecture materials, case studies, practical skills, tests, that correspond to the three-stage knowledge and skills assessment.
For the years of working, the University has trained more than 14,000 physicians and more than 6,000 pharmacists. Graduates of the University are great organizers and leaders of practical public health, heads of clinic departments, head physicians. Over the years, superior positions in the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus were occupied by K.N. Anishchenko, N.I. Stepanenko, V.M. Orekhovskiy, V.V. Kolbanov, A.S. Romanenkov. I.M. Drobyshevskaya was the Minister of Health. S.N. Govorushkin and V.N. Lectorov were the Chairmen of the Committee on Health of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus. A.N. Kosinets was Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus (2005-2007), the Chairman of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee (24.11.2008-27.12.2014). Currently, he is the Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office. Yu.N. Derkach is the Chief of health in the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee.

Filipenko, S.K. Ustyugova - our graduates. The rector of Gomel Medical University A.N. Lyzikov: a graduate of VSMU. Only in the Russian Federation 5 generals-our graduates serve today. Colonel-General I.M. Chizh heads the Main Military Medical Department of the Russian Federation. The Department of Medical Service of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus is headed by our graduate - Colonel L.A. Bogdanov, the Central military hospital – S.F. Savitskiy.
On March 18, 2015, MD Anatoliy Tadeushevich Shchastniy, the graduate of 1984, Professor of Surgery Chair of the Faculty of Advanced Training and Retraining, was appointed as a rector of Vitebsk State Medical University.
The admission of foreign citizens to clinical residency is maintained during the calendar year. Foreign citizens who have a medical degree, the equivalent of higher medical education of the Republic of Belarus, may apply to the clinical residency of VSMU. Work experience is not obligatory. The duration of training in clinical residency for foreign citizens is not less than 24 months.
The cultural life of the University is multinational. Each year students have several sports programs at their disposal: cricket tournament, chess competition, football championship, and other sports events. The immerse number of cultural festivals and celebrations, which take place all-the-year-round, demonstrate international cultural diversity. The annual festival "Student Autumn", National Cuisine Feasts, Faculty Days, National Student Union Holidays with a wide range of cultural activities present a perfect chance for foreign students to display their skills and abilities.
The variety of Belorussian countrysides and landscapes offers many fascinating excursion traveling tours around the country to all tastes. Students may enjoy this kind of activity all year round. The University maintains strong relations with parents. For parents' convenience and peace of mind, the administration staff communicated with parents whatever possible, by phone, fax, and e-mail to keep them abreast of their children's progress.
The University has the functioning ideological Center. Ideological Center, in conjunction with the department of pedagogical work, implements the following programs: "Humanization and humanitarianization of higher medical education", "Pedagogical work in the system of medical education", "Moral codex of employees and students of Vitebsk State Medical University".
Ideological Center of Vitebsk State Medical University in 2012 began to attract students to the preparation and conduction of ideological events: meetings of the school of the young voter, meetings of the school "Leader", student conferences and roundtable discussions, a competition of students' creative works dedicated to the 67th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Second World War.
The Clinic of Vitebsk State Medical University provides a wide range of paid medical services. All prices are obtained approval from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus. Professors and associate professors of VSMU receive patients in pediatrics, gynecology, cardiology, oncology, neurology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, internal medicine, allergology and immunology, traumatology and orthopedics, urology, hematology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology. Any patient can attend a professor or associate professor by the previous appointment by telephone.
System of informational work functions at the University, there are informational offices affiliated with the department of Social-Humanitarian Sciences and the Department of Public Health and Health Protection. The newspaper "Medvuzovets" is issued monthly.
